Spain Secures Second World Cup Title with Victory Over Argentina

Spain has claimed their second World Cup championship after Ferran Torres netted the decisive goal in the 106th minute, leading the team to a 1-0 win against Argentina at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on 19 July.

    How the Final Unfolded

Throughout the match, patience was key for Luis de la Fuente’s team. Spain maintained control of possession but struggled to penetrate Argentina’s solid defense for most of the game. The dynamics shifted when Enzo Fernández received a red card, leaving the defending champions with ten players on the pitch.

The crucial goal arose from a coordinated effort down the left flank: Nico Williams headed the ball to Torres, who expertly found the net. Argentina’s situation worsened with injuries to both starting central defenders, Cuti Romero and Lisandro Martínez, who had to leave the field in the second half, significantly depleting their squad as extra time approached.

This victory ends Argentina’s effort to defend their title from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and adds another championship to Spain’s achievements, reinforced by their European Championship win two years ago, marking this era as the most successful in Spanish football history.

Among notable performers in the tournament, Marc Cucurella, a summer signing by Real Madrid, was one of only three players to participate in every minute of every match during Spain’s journey, along with goalkeeper Unai Simón and defender Pau Cubarsí. His performance in the final showcased effective positional discipline: he was aggressive in the first half, nearly scoring with a low shot that skimmed past Dibu Martínez’s left post, and adopted a more cautious approach in the second as Argentina made changes on their right flank.

Cucurella also became part of a late incident when Lionel Messi reportedly sought a red card against him, but VAR did not intervene. In the match, he recovered possession five times and won three of his five duels throughout the regular and extra time, contributing to a defensive unit that conceded just one goal over eight games in the tournament.

Spain’s squad celebrated their victory in Madrid on Monday evening before shifting their focus back to club football. Cucurella will soon start pre-season training with Real Madrid under new head coach Jose Mourinho.
