FIFA Imposes Transfer Bans on São Paulo and Corinthians

São Paulo and Corinthians faced transfer bans from FIFA this Tuesday, as reported by ge.

As a result, São Paulo is temporarily prohibited from registering new players. For Corinthians, this marks the fourth transfer ban—three imposed by FIFA and one by the CBF.

The sanction on São Paulo stems from a delayed payment of 1.05 million euros (approximately R$ 6.08 million) owed to Lazio in Italy, related to the first installment for midfielder Marcos Antônio’s signing.

This punishment directly impacts the organization of the team’s roster. While defensive midfielder Newton was registered with the CBF on time, the newly announced players, Aurélio Buta and Victor Sá, do not yet have the legal clearance to participate. Additionally, the ban prevents the fulfillment and registration of center-back Domingos Duarte’s signing.

In Corinthians’ situation, the recent transfer ban is linked to an unpaid fee for defensive midfielder Charles, owed to Midtjylland of Denmark, set for 2024.

According to ge, Corinthians had agreed to pay 1.6 million euros in three installments. However, the final payment of 800,000 euros was not settled by March of the previous year.

The contract stipulated an extra 200,000 euros in case of delay, and although Corinthians attempted to appeal, they did not succeed in overturning the decision. Consequently, this outstanding debt of 1 million euros (around R$ 5.8 million) resulted in the new transfer ban.
