Paderborn Loses Star Goal-Scorer Filip Bilbija to Derby County
Newly promoted Bundesliga outfit Paderborn has seen the departure of leading goal-scorer Filip Bilbija, who has signed with second-tier English club Derby County. Despite Paderborn’s intentions to renew the 26-year-old’s expiring contract, Bilbija opted to turn down the offer after becoming a free agent three weeks ago. Last season, he scored 15 goals for Paderborn.
The losses continue to mount at Paderborn
Prior to Bilbija’s exit, Paderborn also lost defender Calvin Brackelmann, who moved to Augsburg on a free transfer, and goalkeeper Dennis Seimen, who returned to Stuttgart following the expiry of his loan deal. Bilbija’s move adds to a troubling trend, as three outgoing transactions have seen the club not gain any financial return. Given this situation, it is likely that Paderborn is eager to finalize the €5m sale of attacking midfielder Mika Baur to Celtic.

Recent comments from Paderborn sporting director Sebastian Lange hinted that the club is relying on the revenue from the Baur transfer. In an interview with Kicker, Lange noted, “without giving too much away, we’re already in a position to do that [buy more players].” It is rumored that Lange and his team are interested in former Kaiserslautern standout Daisuke Yokota, who is currently with Hannover 96.
Paderborn may also be looking to sell midfielder Laurin Curda to Mainz for approximately €3m.
Statement on Filip Bilbija’s departure
“Thank you, Filip, for everything!” Paderborn expressed regarding Bilbija’s move on their website. “Thanks for your dedication, your goals, and so many wonderful moments together! We wish you every success and all the best on your journey ahead! It was a great time together!”
