Arsenal have confirmed that defender William Saliba will be sidelined for an “extended period” following a back injury sustained while representing France at the World Cup.

The 25-year-old had been coping with a back issue for several weeks, which he carried into the tournament. He had to leave the pitch after just 30 minutes during France’s semi-final defeat to Spain.

After returning to London, Saliba consulted with a specialist. It was concluded that surgery would not be necessary, and he will instead begin a managed recovery program.

Saliba also missed France’s bronze medal match, a loss to England.

Earlier in the tournament, he noted, “I’ve had some minor niggles for several months. I’ve been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you’ve got to grit your teeth.”

Last season, Saliba made 50 appearances across all competitions for Arsenal, contributing to the team’s first Premier League title in 22 years and their run to the Champions League final.

Mikel Arteta’s squad is scheduled to face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, 16 August, just five days before they kick off their Premier League title defense against newly promoted Coventry City.
