Aston Villa Advances Negotiations for Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu

Aston Villa is intensifying its efforts to secure SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, with negotiations reportedly advancing significantly. Sources from Germany, corroborated by English reports, indicate that the 23-year-old could soon make a move before the current transfer window closes. Freiburg seems to share this view, having already signed Mio Backhaus as a replacement, demonstrating a proactive approach from a club that rarely adds players without a specific reason.

Villa manager Unai Emery seeks reliable competition and backup for first-choice goalkeeper Emi Martinez, and Atubolu appears to be a fitting candidate. The player has rebuffed interest from Championship teams including Hull City and Coventry City, expressing his desire for a top-tier club. Meanwhile, discussions with major teams like Juventus and AC Milan have cooled, positioning Villa as the frontrunner.

Freiburg has set a price range of €25m to €30m for Atubolu, translating to approximately £21m to £26m. However, the player’s representatives have made it clear that they will not accept just any offer; they need assurance about the project before committing.

During the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, Atubolu was a key player for Freiburg, accumulating 3,060 minutes over 34 league matches, achieving six clean sheets with a save rate of around 63.92%. He also gained experience in the Europa League, where he made 15 appearances and kept five clean sheets, despite suffering a notable 3-0 defeat to Villa in the final.

While this potential signing appears to align with Emery’s strategic planning, questions remain regarding the dynamics once Atubolu joins the squad. With Martinez, who is 32 and firmly established as the first-choice goalkeeper, Atubolu may find himself on the bench. His rejection of Championship offers indicates ambition, but sitting on the sidelines in the Premier League can have its downsides if expectations aren’t met.

German statistics reflect a mixed view of Atubolu’s performance. Although a 63.92% save efficiency is respectable, it does not suggest dominance, as Freiburg finished mid-table. Spending up to €30m on a backup keeper who might only participate in a limited number of domestic games raises financial concerns.

On the other hand, if there are doubts about Martinez’s long-term fitness, investing in a proven 23-year-old could be both a tactical and financial decision. Atubolu is known for his quick reflexes and ability to play well with the ball at his feet, along with his high-level European experience. If Emery sees him as a future first-choice keeper rather than a costly substitute, the transfer fee may be justified. However, ensuring that Atubolu understands his immediate role will be essential to prevent any future discontent.
