Enzo Maresca Aims to Forge His Own Path as Manchester City Manager

Enzo Maresca finally faced the media for the first time yesterday as Manchester City manager. Having served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during City’s successful treble-winning 2022-23 season, Maresca noted similarities in their playing styles. Manchester City is keen to maintain the possession-based approach established under Guardiola. However, Maresca emphasized that he is his own manager and not looking to directly replicate Guardiola’s tactics.

Maresca Distinguishes His Unique Coaching Philosophy

During his first press conference as Manchester City manager, Enzo Maresca made it clear that he is not trying to imitate Pep Guardiola’s philosophies. He asserted that he will lead the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders in his own style, stating, “For me, it’s important to make it clear that I’m here to do my job the way I want. I’m not here to copy someone, I’m here to do my job, to install my football, the way I see football.“

Maresca also confirmed that changes would come to Manchester City’s approach. While he and Guardiola share some philosophies, he stressed that there will be distinct differences in his management. He remarked, “Every manager is different. There can be similar concepts, but every manager is different. The way we approach day-by-day and the approach to games will be different.“

“We’ll see what we need to tweak concepts, but I don’t think any manager can copy and paste another manager. I can copy and paste but I don’t see the football the same way as other managers. That’s why I don’t believe in copy and paste.“

Maresca’s Vision for a Distinct Manchester City Style

Manchester City understood what they were getting when they appointed Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor. They welcomed a manager who shares a compatible philosophy and is already familiar with many players and the club environment. However, the Manchester City board does not expect Maresca to replicate Guardiola’s success. He reiterated his intent to lead in his unique way, reassuring fans that while similarities exist, noticeable differences will surface over time.

It is clear that Maresca’s team will retain a possession-based style, which has been a hallmark of his previous roles at Leicester City and Chelsea. The specifics of how City will build and press may differ under his leadership, integrating new tactical elements. These changes might not be instantly visible at the start of the 2026-27 season, but over time, the distinct character of Maresca’s Manchester City will become apparent.

Maresca emphasized his individuality as a coach, distancing himself from being seen as a “Guardiola clone.” His distinct methodology was evident during his tenures at Leicester City and Chelsea. While it may take time for his vision to fully materialize, the evolution of Manchester City under Maresca will be intriguing to follow as the season progresses.
