Newcastle United Appoints Matthias Jaissle as New Head Coach

Newcastle United has confirmed the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach following Eddie Howe’s departure after nearly five years in the role.

The 38-year-old Jaissle joins from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, where he gained recognition as a promising young coach by securing back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles.

Newcastle identified Jaissle as the leading candidate after what the club described as a thorough and confidential recruitment process.

Jaissle will immediately oversee first-team preparations, joining the squad at their pre-season training camp in La Manga as they gear up for the upcoming Premier League season.

The new head coach takes over a club that is currently experiencing significant changes both on and off the field.

Howe’s exit marked the conclusion of one of the most successful managerial tenures in Newcastle’s modern history. He steered the Magpies from relegation threats to domestic silverware and consistent European qualifications.

The former Bournemouth manager guided Newcastle to their first major trophy in 70 years by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025 before leaving the position earlier this summer.

Jaissle now faces the task of building on those accomplishments during a challenging transfer window.

Newcastle has already permitted the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, while reports suggest captain Bruno Guimaraes is also nearing a move to Arsenal.

After his appointment, Jaissle expressed his excitement about joining Newcastle, calling it “an incredible honour.”

“When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice,” he stated.

“The ambition of the club, the vision for the future, and the opportunities ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be.”

“I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition, and the direction the club is taking.”

Chief executive David Hopkinson praised Jaissle as one of the most respected young coaches in the football world, expressing confidence in his ability to guide Newcastle into the next phase of its development.

During his tenure at Red Bull Salzburg, Jaissle garnered acclaim by winning two Austrian Bundesliga titles before making the move to Al Ahli in 2023.

His teams have become known for their aggressive pressing, quick transitions, and proactive style of play, which reflects the Red Bull coaching philosophy shaped by Ralf Rangnick.

Newcastle’s new manager will have little time to acclimate before the competitive season starts.

The Magpies have pre-season matches lined up against Valencia, Everton, Bayer Leverkusen, and Strasbourg, leading up to their Premier League opener at home against Liverpool later this month.

With a new head coach now in place and further changes anticipated in the transfer market, Newcastle’s next chapter has officially begun under one of Europe’s most highly regarded young managers.
