That development matters. Mbaye has been viewed as one of the most intriguing young winger options on the market and, for Liverpool, the broader context is clear. The club are reshaping their wide attacking department after Mohamed Salah’s summer exit, while uncertainty around other forward positions has naturally heightened attention on elite young talent.

Leverkusen had been seen as credible competition for the Paris Saint-Germain teenager. Their track record in offering pathway, minutes and patient development made them a realistic alternative. Yet the latest indications from Germany suggest the financials around Mbaye have pushed them towards a different solution, with Diaby now emerging as the priority target.

From Liverpool’s perspective, that potentially removes the most serious obstacle. PSG’s stance has been firm and previous reports have suggested a fee of €40m would be required. That is a substantial outlay for a teenager, but it is also the level modern elite clubs must often reach when trying to secure one of Europe’s standout prospects before his value escalates even further.

Mbaye Deal Could Accelerate

There is still work to do. PSG hold the cards on valuation, and Liverpool would need confidence in both the player’s readiness and long-term ceiling before committing to a package of that size. But if Leverkusen are indeed stepping away, the landscape changes.

Recruitment at the highest level often turns on timing as much as conviction. In this case, Liverpool may feel they now have a cleaner run at Mbaye, and that can be enough to move a negotiation from interest into something more concrete.

From a Liverpool fan perspective, this report is encouraging because it fits the wider shape of the summer. The wing department needs freshness, unpredictability and, above all, future-proofing. Replacing lost output is one challenge, but building a new attacking cycle is the bigger one.

Mbaye sounds like the sort of move supporters can get excited about. He is young, highly rated and clearly admired by more than one top club. When teams like Liverpool and Leverkusen are both in the frame, it usually tells you the talent level is serious.

There will be understandable caution over a €40m fee for a teenager. Fans always ask the same fair question, can he help now, or is this purely for later? Ideally, Liverpool need both. They need players who can grow into stars, but they also need immediate competition in the squad.

If Leverkusen really are moving towards Diaby, that feels like a genuine opening Liverpool should exploit quickly. Elite young players rarely stay available for long once the field narrows. If the club believe Mbaye can become a top-level winger under Andoni Iraola, this is the moment to be decisive.

Supporters will not judge this deal only on potential, they will judge it on what comes next around it. But as part of a bigger attacking rebuild, it makes plenty of sense.
