Barcelona’s Raphinha Faces Increased Competition Following Summer Reinforcements

FC Barcelona have strengthened their attack aggressively this summer, and one player who could feel the impact more than most is Raphinha, according to SPORT.

The Brazilian’s extraordinary 2024/25 campaign, in which he produced 34 goals and 26 assists, left him without a genuine rival for a starting place.

Last season, however, told a different story. Hampered by recurring injuries, Raphinha still contributed 21 goals and eight assists, but his performances were not as influential.

Now, with Barcelona reinforcing their attack, his place in the starting XI is no longer untouchable, thanks to the summer arrivals.

    Flick still believes in him

Raphinha continues to enjoy Hansi Flick’s complete confidence. The German coach has consistently backed the Brazilian, even during his more difficult moments.

Even so, the arrival of such strong competition is a clear indication that no position is guaranteed.

Persistent problems with his right hamstring made last season a frustrating one for the Brazilian international, with several setbacks disrupting his rhythm.

More worrying still, he suffered further physical issues while representing Brazil at the World Cup.

Barcelona’s priority is to restore Raphinha to full fitness so he can perform at his highest level again. At the same time, the club have also ensured they have high-quality alternatives should injuries continue to be a concern.

    Gordon leads the competition

Anthony Gordon represents the biggest threat to Raphinha’s place on the left wing.

The England international possesses many of the same qualities as the Brazilian and is viewed as a natural fit for that position. Barcelona’s investment of €70 million plus €10 million in bonuses underlines how highly they rate him.

While the Belgian is considered a long-term investment at just 18 years old, Barcelona intend for him to be fully integrated into the first-team setup despite wearing a Barça Atletic squad number.

Should he make an immediate impact, he will quickly become another option alongside Raphinha and Gordon.

On top of that, Karim Adeyemi adds even more depth. Although the German prefers starting on the right before cutting inside onto his stronger foot, he is equally capable of operating on the opposite flank.

    No more makeshift wingers

One consequence of Barcelona’s increased depth is that Flick is expected to rely far less on midfielders filling in on the left.

Last season, Fermin Lopez was frequently used there, while Gavi and Dani Olmo also occupied the role at times. With several natural wide players now available, the German coach has the luxury of deploying specialist wingers instead.

Provided he stays fit, Raphinha is still expected to start the season as Barcelona’s first-choice left winger. But there is no escaping one reality: the Brazilian will face more competition for his place than at any point since arriving at the club.
