Newly-promoted Coventry City has initiated talks regarding a potential transfer for Olympique de Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes, 25, who aims to return to the Premier League this summer, as reported by L’Équipe.

Frank Lampard’s team is among several clubs that have inquired about Gomes’ situation, with Marseille ready to allow the England international to depart before the transfer window closes.

Gomes played regularly during Marseille’s pre-season, notably featuring as a No.10 in Wednesday’s 3-0 friendly victory over Al Shahania, partnering with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Tochukwu Nnadi in midfield.

Despite these appearances, Gomes focuses on securing a permanent role in England. The midfielder spent the latter half of last season on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he faced challenges.

Notwithstanding the difficulties, the 25-year-old is determined to make his mark in the Premier League. With Coventry returning to the top flight, they have emerged as a serious option for his next move.

Marseille is willing to facilitate Gomes’ exit should a fitting offer come through. He joined the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2025 and is among the club’s higher earners as they look to trim their wage expenses.

Gomes featured regularly during OM’s pre-season preparations and was used as a No.10 by Bruno Genesio during Wednesday’s 3-0 friendly victory over Al Shahania, operating ahead of the Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Tochukwu Nnadi in a midfield pairing.

However, the former Manchester United midfielder’s priority is to secure another opportunity in England. Gomes spent the second half of last season on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers, although his spell at Molineux proved difficult.

Despite that experience, the 25-year-old remains keen to establish himself in the Premier League. Coventry, promoted to the top flight this summer, have now emerged as one potential destination.
