Coleraine Starts Season Strong with Victory Over Dungannon Swifts

    Irish Premiership

    Dungannon Swifts 1 – 3 Coleraine FT

Coleraine demonstrated their title ambitions with a convincing 3-1 victory against Dungannon Swifts in their season opener, fueled by goals from Jay Henderson, Ben Doherty, and Matthew Shevlin.

The match began evenly, but in first-half stoppage time, summer signing Jay Henderson put Coleraine ahead.

Ben Doherty, playing his first Premiership match since returning from Derry City, increased their lead significantly.

Although Sean McAllister netted a goal for the Swifts, Matthew Shevlin ensured Coleraine claimed all three points.

    Coleraine Control Against Dungannon

The Swifts believed they had scored first, but Danny Wallace’s goal was disallowed for offside. At the same time, Dunne made several crucial saves to deny Coleraine’s Will Patching and Senan Devine.

Henderson quickly made an impact after replacing injured defender Cameron Stewart, displaying poise as he controlled the ball and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Declan Dunne just before halftime.

Early in the second half, Kealan Dillon squandered a golden opportunity for the home side, missing the target with a rising shot from 12 yards. Coleraine capitalized shortly thereafter, doubling their lead 10 minutes into the half.

Doherty and Will Patching executed a short corner, enabling Doherty to curl a stunning left-footed shot into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area on his second debut for Coleraine.

Joel Cooper came close to adding to the tally but was thwarted by a precise tackle from Wallace and a clever foot save by Dunne.

The Swifts found some hope midway through the second half when Sean McAllister collected the ball from midfield and struck a low shot from 25 yards that beat Lewis Webb.

However, Coleraine quickly extinguished any comeback hopes by scoring a third goal with just 12 minutes left. Substitute Lewis McGregor surged to the byline, delivering a low cross that the reliable Shevlin finished well to secure a comfortable win for the away side.

Coleraine underlined their title credentials with an impressive 3-1 opening day away win at Dungannon Swifts thanks to goals from Jay Henderson, Ben Doherty and Matthew Shevlin.

After a largely even opening 45 minutes, the visitors took the lead in first-half stoppage time through summer signing Jay Henderson.

Ben Doherty extended their lead in his first Premiership match since rejoining the side from Derry City.

Sean McAllister pulled a goal back for the Swifts before Matthew Shevlin secured the three points for Coleraine.

    Coleraine dominate Dungannon

The Swifts thought they had taken the lead early on but Danny Wallace’s finish was ruled out for offside while, at the other end, Dunne produced a string of fine saves to deny Will Patching and Senan Devine.

Former Ross County man Henderson was only on the pitch a matter of minutes following an injury to defender Cameron Stewart, but he showed plenty of composure to control the ball before drilling a low shot out of the reach of Declan Dunne to give the away side the lead just before the break.

Kealan Dillon passed up a great opportunity to level for the hosts within minutes of the restart but his rising shot from 12 yards failed to trouble Coleraine goalkeeper Lewis Webb and they were made to pay shortly after as the Bannsiders doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second period.

Doherty and Will Patching worked a short corner, allowing the former Derry City man to step forward and curl a delightful left foot shot into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area on his second debut for the club.

Joel Cooper twice went close to extending their advantage only to be denied by a wonderfully timed tackle from Wallace and a smart save with his foot by Dunne.

The home side were thrown a lifeline midway through the second half when Sean McAllister picked up possession midway inside the Coleraine half before firing low past Lewis Webb from fully 25 yards.

But hopes of a comeback were snuffed out by a third Coleraine goal with 12 minutes remaining.

Substitute Lewis McGregor raced to the byline before delivering a low pass across the front of goal and there was the ever-reliable Shevlin to open his account for the new season to give the away side more breathing space.
