Newcastle United celebrated a trophy victory in their first pre-season friendly, yet head coach Matthias Jaissle remained rooted in reality. The team achieved success against Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium.

“We will not smash the locker room now and celebrate,” he remarked. “We still have a lot to do.”

The need for focus quickly became evident when Newcastle found themselves behind just four minutes into the match, thanks to Filip Ugrinic’s curling strike.

Despite this setback, Jaissle saw a positive reaction from his players in a competitive encounter. The game took a turn when forward Anthony Elanga sustained an injury from a tackle by Jose Gaya, who received a red card for his actions. Although Jaissle admitted to feeling “in fear” at the sight of Elanga’s distress, the forward was able to walk off the field shortly after and is not believed to have suffered a serious injury.

Instead of losing their composure, the team rallied; striker Yoane Wissa, coming off the bench, scored two goals. Substitutes Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur, who joined from Hoffenheim and Ajax respectively, also made significant contributions.

“Winning games always helps to gain confidence,” Jaissle stated, adding that the players deserved a brief break after their hard week of training.

‘Time is the key’

The club faces a critical juncture following a period of considerable changes. Former head coach Eddie Howe has departed, while key players like Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon have also left over the past year.

Some supporters who traveled to witness the match showed their humor in these transitions, adapting a chant that previously included Guimaraes and Isak, now players for Arsenal and Liverpool. “We’ve got someone in the middle,” they sang. “He knows exactly what we need. [Sven] Botman at the back, someone in attack, Newcastle are going to win the Premier League.”

The shift in the squad’s dynamics is palpable as a new generation begins to emerge. The average age of the team has significantly decreased, with forward Harvey Barnes the oldest starter at 28.

This match also marked debuts for goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, 24, midfielder Aladji Bamba, 20, and forward Toure, 20, while 18-year-old Steur showcased his talent from the bench.

Off the field, Newcastle is actively seeking additional experience, especially in the midfield, while veterans Dan Burn and Fabian Schar continue to play vital roles in the locker room.

Jaissle has already displayed a decisive approach, leaving out veteran goalkeeper Nick Pope from the squad against Valencia despite Pope’s significant contributions previously. “I had a talk with Nick,” Jaissle noted. “I really appreciate what he did in his career so far. He knows exactly the situation right now and we need to deal with it in the best possible way, but I always appreciate the player and the human being behind.”

This week has proven to be eventful for Jaissle as he navigates a series of intense training sessions. Looking ahead, he expresses eagerness about visiting St James’ Park for the first time as head coach next week.

“For sure I will be visiting the stadium and getting my first impressions,” he said.

Newcastle could have lost their heads, but striker Yoane Wissa came off the bench to score two goals , while fellow substitutes Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur also caught the eye following their summer moves from Hoffenheim and Ajax respectively.

“The players did well and there was a huge commitment to see in each session, so they really deserve two days off and then we start again.”

He was even running down the touchline in tandem with his players as they advanced on goal at times.

Just as there is a fine balance on the field, so, too is there one off it.

Newcastle are in the market for additional experience, particularly in the middle of the park, and veterans Dan Burn and Fabian Schar will remain important voices in the dressing room.

But Jaissle has also shown the first sign of a ruthless streak.

Nick Pope was a pivotal figure under his predecessor, but the German left the 34-year-old out of the squad altogether against Valencia.

“I had a talk with Nick,” Jaissle said. “I really appreciate what he did in his career so far.

“He knows exactly the situation right now and we need to deal with it in the best possible way, but I always appreciate the player and the human being behind.”

It has been a whirlwind first week in Spain, following a series of double sessions, as Jaissle now returns Newcastle for the first time as the club’s head coach.

The 38-year-old already has a landmark in mind to see before he is formally unveiled at St James’ Park next week.
