Liverpool Looks to Strengthen Squad in Post-World Cup Transfer Surge

During the 2026 World Cup, Liverpool‘s transfer business slowed down massively.

The Anfield outfit managed to sign Victor Munoz during the tournament but, compared to their title rivals, they fell a bit behind.

However, now that the tournament is over, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive with several players now edging closer to an Anfield switch.

This is obviously good news for Liverpool as it means that they’re well on their way to bolstering their ranks and potentially getting back to the top of the table.

But, since many other clubs also want the same players, there is obviously going to be a lot of competition.

Despite this, a Euro giant may have just given Liverpool the green light to sign one of the most-wanted targets.

Borussia Dortmund are going to make another bid for Said El Mala

As many people will know, Liverpool’s attack is their main area of concern at the moment.

The Anfield outfit have lost Mohamed Salah and, since Hugo Ekitike won’t be back in action for a while, there are still a few question marks hanging over the future of Liverpool’s forward line.

Several attackers such as Said El Mala, Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Ibrahim Mbaye have already been linked with a switch.

At the moment, El Mala and Mbaye are two of the strongest links with Liverpool but, of the two, the Senegal international would be their preferred choice.

And now, thanks to an update from Sky Germany journalist Patrick Berger, it seems like Andoni Iraola’s wish could be granted.

“Borussia Dortmund also rejected with the next offer for Said El Mala (19) by 1. FC Köln,” he wrote via his personal X account.

“According to Sky info, the offer was a fixed sum of just under €40m, with bonus payments it could have reached €45m. Too little for the Effzeh! Bild also reports on the rejected offer.

“The Cologne side plan, according to current reports, to 100% include El Mala for the new season, only an extraordinary offer can change that. FC is still demanding at least €50m.

“Dortmund doesn’t want to let go and plans to make another bid.”

Liverpool may miss out on Said El Mala but they could soften that blow by signing Ibrahim Mbaye

Liverpool’s right-wing is a major problem area for them at the moment.

If Salah was still around, he’d easily be their first choice in that position and would probably be handed a regular starting role by Iraola.

However, thanks to how many bridges were burnt when Arne Slot was in charge, there was no coming back for the Egyptian King.

This means that Liverpool will need to find a replacement for him soon, otherwise, they’ll end up in an even worse position this season than they were last term.

Mbaye may only be 18 years old but, since he’s already started plenty of games for Paris Saint-Germain and is a regular feature for Senegal, it’s clear that he’s ready for that step up.

Of course, he’d probably have to share that role with Federico Chiesa and Jeremie Frimpong this season but, after enduring an entire campaign of Premier League football he’d probably be more than ready to start every game in the 2027-28 season.

If things do end up going this way, it would mean that a deal for El Mala was be off the table but, if it meant that Liverpool could sign Mbaye, it would almost certainly be worth letting the German join Dortmund rather than the Reds.
