Mateta Reflects on Milan Medical Experience: ‘I’m Grateful for the Bad News’

Jean-Philippe Mateta expressed his gratitude to AC Milan for revealing the severity of a knee injury during a failed medical examination, which he described as “more serious than I had been told” by Crystal Palace. Initially disappointed by the collapse of his January transfer to the Rossoneri, which had seen a €35 million deal set to go through, Mateta now views this moment as a significant turning point in his career thanks to the thoroughness of the Italian club’s medical staff.

In an interview with Canal+ Foot in France, Mateta recounted how the medical examination abruptly halted as doctors explained the extent of his knee injury. He reflected, “At that moment, when they explained it to me, all sorts of things went through my head.” Despite the initial shock, he emphasized, “I don’t regret anything, because if I hadn’t done that medical exam, how long would I have been dragging this knee issue along? How long?”

Fortunately, the medical evaluation allowed the striker to identify the problem accurately. He described his relief, stating, “Luckily, I had that medical and found out exactly what was wrong with me.”

Mateta, who has a history with knee issues after rupturing the meniscus in his right knee while at Mainz in 2019, recovered from surgery that had kept him sidelined for six months. Doctors at Milan deemed his condition serious enough to warrant another operation, contrasting with Crystal Palace’s assessment that conservative treatment would suffice.

Following the failed transfer, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner noted that it “wasn’t a big surprise” for the player to fail the medical exam. He explained, “Of course, if you’re playing for two and a half months with a swollen knee and you have to be managed, we knew and he knew that there is an issue in his knee.”

Ultimately, surgery was not necessary. Mateta received five weeks of complete rest and treatment to facilitate his recovery, enabling him to participate in the World Cup representing France.

The striker had at first seemed upset and disappointed that his January transfer to the Rossoneri collapsed when the €35m deal had been agreed.

Looking back, he now considers it a crucial turning point in his career, and is grateful that the Italian club doctors were so thorough.

“I was going through the medical exam and suddenly everything stopped,” Mateta told Canal+ Foot in France.

The striker had ruptured the meniscus in his right knee when playing for Mainz in 2019 and had surgery that kept him on the touchline for six months.

Milan doctors felt that the issue was sufficiently serious that it required another operation, whereas Crystal Palace assured that therapy and load management would suffice.

It raised further eyebrows when then Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner said it “wasn’t a big surprise” that he failed the medical with Milan.

“Of course, if you’re playing for two and a half months with a swollen knee and you have to be managed, we knew and he knew that there is an issue in his knee.”

Ultimately, surgery wasn’t required, but Mateta was given complete rest and treatment for five weeks to help the knee recover enough that he could participate with France at the World Cup.
