Mikel Arteta Considers Ethan Nwaneri’s Future Amid Arsenal’s Squad Decisions

Mikel Arteta has shared insights into Ethan Nwaneri‘s potential season away from Arsenal, emphasizing the necessity for the young midfielder to secure regular playing time to continue his development.

Nwaneri’s future has become a focal point for discussion as Arsenal enters the summer transfer window, with speculation arising about the possibility of his permanent sale by the Premier League champions.

However, Arteta, in his remarks leading up to the Community Shield against Manchester City, pointed towards a different scenario for the young talent.

Arteta suggested that a loan could be the most favorable option for Nwaneri if consistent first-team opportunities at the Emirates are not available.

The manager acknowledged Nwaneri’s growth during his time away, stating, “I don’t know the plans [for Nwaneri], but certainly he opens your eyes in terms of how much a young player can evolve in such a short period.” Arteta further praised Nwaneri’s skills and commitment to the game.

Reflecting on Nwaneri’s experiences abroad, Arteta said, “Work and experience abroad come with certain difficulties and challenges, what you can really get out of that, and I think he’s done it in a brilliant way. It’s unquestionable the talent, the desire, the love, and the passion he has for the game. It’s something that I always loved about Ethan. I think he had some great games and he’s shown everybody that he has the ability to be here.”

While Arteta did not finalize where Nwaneri might find himself this season, he emphasized the importance of game time over just being part of the squad. “I want him to be at the club, but in the middle, long term, what is best for the player? Ethan needs to play football, and if he stays here, it’s because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes. Otherwise, it’s just something that is not good for anybody, I think,” Arteta said.

Arteta firmly believes Nwaneri has the talent necessary to succeed with Arsenal, leaving the club’s decision to hinge on whether he can provide the young player with adequate opportunities for play this upcoming season.

With the transfer window still active, it appears probable that Nwaneri may spend another season away from the club if first-team chances remain uncertain.

The Arsenal boss praised Nwaneri’s development but admitted there is little value in keeping him if first-team opportunities cannot be guaranteed.

Nwaneri’s future has been one of the biggest talking points of Arsenal’s summer, with reports suggesting the Premier League champions have even considered a permanent sale.

Yet Arteta’s latest comments ahead of the Community Shield against Manchester City point towards a different outcome.

Rather than hinting at an exit, the Arsenal manager suggested another temporary move could be the best solution if first-team opportunities at the Emirates cannot be guaranteed.

Reflecting on the midfielder’s development, Arteta praised the impact of his time away from north London.

“I don’t know the plans [for Nwaneri], but certainly he opens your eyes in terms of how much a young player can evolve in such a short period,” Arteta said.

I think he had some great games and he’s shown everybody that he has the ability to be here.”

The Arsenal manager stopped short of confirming where Nwaneri will spend the coming season, but he made it clear that playing time, rather than simply remaining in the squad, will determine the club’s decision.

“I want him to be at the club, but in the middle, long term, what is best for the player?” Arteta said. “Ethan needs to play football, and if he stays here, it’s because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes. Otherwise, it’s just something that is not good for anybody, I think.”

Arteta made clear he believes Nwaneri has already demonstrated he possesses the talent to succeed at Arsenal. The question now is whether there is enough room in an increasingly competitive squad for the youngster to receive the regular minutes his manager believes are essential.

With the transfer window still open, Arsenal’s decision will ultimately depend on whether Arteta can offer Nwaneri a meaningful role this season.

If not, another spell away from the club increasingly looks like the most likely outcome.
