Liverpool Looks to Strengthen Winger Position Following Transfer Moves

Liverpool faced challenges last season with a significant decline in performance from their wingers. Key players Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo helped the team clinch the 2024/25 Premier League title under manager Arne Slot. However, with Diaz departing to Bayern Munich and Salah and Gakpo struggling in Slot’s second season, the club has opted for a change.

Salah, 34, has transferred to Trabzonspor on a substantial free deal, while reports suggest Gakpo is nearing a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool Seeks Improvement on the Flanks

The summer transfer window has highlighted a pressing need for quality wingers, prompting the arrival of Victor Munoz from Osasuna. The Anfield squad also has its sights set on Bradley Barcola, but sporting director Richard Hughes will need to negotiate closer to Paris Saint-Germain’s €160 million to €170 million valuation for a deal to be reached.

One aspect influencing the decision to part with Diaz was the development of youth prospect Rio Ngumoha. The club aims to clear his path to a first-team spot, as the teenager, signed from Chelsea in 2024, is being groomed to compete with Gakpo.

Manager Slot has shown hesitance to field the 17-year-old regularly, leading to Bayern Munich’s unexpected bid for him before the summer window opened. The Germans aimed to capitalize on the young player’s relatively short contract, which only allowed him to sign a three-year professional deal last year.

Rio Ngumoha Expected to Sign New Contract with Liverpool

According to a report in TEAMtalk, the promising winger is currently negotiating a new deal with Liverpool, which will include a significant salary increase.

“Liverpool have already held discussions with Rio Ngumoha regarding a long-term contract, and they anticipate a deal will be reached in the near future,” noted the report from TEAMtalk.

“Liverpool is prepared to acknowledge his rapid advancement and provide a significantly improved contract after previously offering him the maximum three-year deal allowed upon his entry into the club. Discussions have begun, and it is expected that they will proceed over the upcoming months before Ngumoha commits to the next phase of his career at Liverpool,” the report added.

This development indicates that Ngumoha will likely play an important role under new head coach Andoni Iraola. The winger had a successful conclusion to last season and made a splash for England during their pre-FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States. His agility, skills, and speed are anticipated to be essential assets for Iraola’s strategy in his inaugural season, regardless of whether Barcola joins the team.

Liverpool suffered from a steep drop in output from their wingers last season.

Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo all powered the Reds to the 2024/25 Premier League title under Arne Slot. Diaz however was sold to Bayern Munich with Salah and Gakpo coming up short under Slot in his second season in charge.

Salah, 34, has been let go – joining Trabzonspor on a mammoth free transfer while Gakpo is thought to be closing in on a deal to join Tottenham.

Liverpool need quality from out wide

One-v-one quality out wide was always going to be a priority in the window this summer with Victor Munoz already arriving from Osasuna.

Bradley Barcola is also in the Anfield side’s sights but Richard Hughes is going to have to get much closer to Paris Saint-Germain’s €160m to €170m valuation before a deal is done.

A key reason behind the decision to sell Diaz was Rio Ngumoha‘s development. The club did not want anything to stand in his way – with the teenager signed from Chelsea in 2024 being given licence to compete with Gakpo for a first-team role.

Slot was unwilling to throw in the 17-year-old from the start very often however – leading to Bayern Munich making a cheeky transfer bid ahead of the summer window opening.

The Germans were seeking to take advantage of the England international’s relatively short contract duration since he was only permitted to sign a three-year professional deal when he extended last year.

Rio Ngumoha set for new Liverpool contract

A report in TEAMtalk is now claiming that the talented winger is in talks with Liverpool over a new deal – one that will net him a hefty pay rise.

“Liverpool have already held talks with Rio Ngumoha over a new long-term contract and expect an agreement to be in place in the coming months,” the report reads.

“Liverpool are now ready to recognise his rapid rise with a significantly improved deal after previously giving the teenager the maximum three-year contract allowed when he joined the club.

“Talks have already begun and the expectation is that the process will continue over the coming months before the teenager puts pen to paper on the next stage of his Liverpool career.”

That surely means that Ngumoha is set for a massive role to play under new head coach Andoni Iraola. Ngumoha enjoyed a productive end to the season – going on to star for England in their pre-FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States.

His trickery, skill and pace will all be valuable weapons for the Basque tactico in his first campaign – whether Barcola joins or not.
