Dan Burn Embraces Change as Newcastle United Prepares for New Season

Dan Burn returned to Newcastle United’s training ground after a short break following the World Cup and felt as if he had joined a new club.
“I’m still learning names to be honest,” the England defender acknowledged.
His feeling is understandable, given the recent upheaval at the club. The summer saw the departures of manager Eddie Howe and key players Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon.
New head coach Matthias Jaissle has brought along several new staff members, and Burn is also familiarizing himself with new teammates, including Lukas Hornicek, Ewen Jaouen, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur, and Bazoumana Toure.
Furthermore, right-back Amar Dedic is soon expected to arrive from Benfica.
Instead of bracing for a challenging season, contrary to some pundits’ predictions, Burn aims to lead Newcastle back into European competition as the new team captain.
“We’ve always done well as a team when we have that thing where it’s us against the world,” Burn stated after Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Strasbourg in their final pre-season friendly of the summer.
“I feel like we were always written off a little bit. We always seem to be backs against the wall fighting.
“For me, that’s when we play at our best, when we’ve got that underdog mentality, so hopefully we will kick on.”

Burn knows that all of Newcastle’s new arrivals are 24 years old or younger and have no Premier League experience.
However, he is eager to “embrace the change” and help the new players understand the significance of playing for the club.
“Right now, can you tell if someone is going to be the next Bruno?” he pondered. “Maybe not, but I think there’s definitely ability there.”
Jaissle has emphasized “transition” since taking over, noting that Burn’s leadership will be essential in guiding younger players through this period of adaptation.
It will depend on Burn and the club’s other senior members to drive those around them, all while being aware of the high standards set when Newcastle qualified for the Champions League and ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by winning the EFL Cup.
Although Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season, they previously demonstrated a fierce competitive spirit under Howe.
Burn remarked, however, that they are “not allowed to” embrace certain aggressive tactics anymore.
“It seemed everything we did was stopped in the Premier League in the season after,” he noted regarding various rule changes.
“It’s more a mentality. Not that we ever tried to hurt people, but everyone said that. People feared us and didn’t want to play against us. I’d love for us to have a bit of that.
“All the best teams seem to. If that’s going to help us, I’d love to do that but I’d be surprised if the Premier League allowed us to.”
The Premier League will see this new-look Newcastle team in action when they face Liverpool at St James’ Park next week (Sunday, 16:30 BST).

Burn had a memorable lunch with Keegan at the end of May after being invited by the former Newcastle manager and described him as a “great person to be around.”
“I don’t think we need any motivation,” he added. “Either us or the city.”
