Chelsea Hires Set-Piece Specialist Austin MacPhee to Boost Coaching Staff
Chelsea Football Club has enlisted the expertise of Austin MacPhee as their new set-piece coach, aiming to enhance their tactical proficiency. The club reached a compensation agreement with Aston Villa for the Scottish coach, known for his effective approach to both attacking and defending set-pieces during his tenure under Unai Emery.
MacPhee joined Chelsea in late July, quickly becoming an integral member of the team’s coaching staff. Xabi Alonso, Chelsea’s new manager, discussed this addition in a recent interview with the Men In Blazers Network, expressing his commitment to assembling a team of top-tier specialists.
Alonso remarked, “We want to have the best possible specialists in their departments. For sure, Austin has experience in the Premier League. For the staff, for us, it is going to be challenging to learn quickly and adapt to the Premier League as well.”
He acknowledged the significant role MacPhee and other returning staff members would play in preparing the team for the rigors of the league. “To have Austin around, Ben (Roberts), and other people that were here last year with these fresh experiences from the Premier League and knowing what it takes to win games and prepare for each game – it helps a lot,” Alonso added.
With MacPhee now on board, Chelsea is looking ahead to their Premier League opener against Fulham, scheduled for Monday next week.
