Headline: Liverpool Eyes Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri to Strengthen Squad

was one of Liverpool‘s biggest flops last season.

Most people expected the German to be the Reds’ main creative force after Trent Alexander-Arnold left but, in reality, it looked like he was out of his depth for most of the campaign.

The 23-year-old did still manage to score seven goals and get 10 assists for his teammates but, compared to his 2024-25 campaign for Bayer Leverkusen where he had 31 goal contributions in total, he was clearly miles away from where he needed to be.

This season, everyone is hoping that things are going to be different, especially now that Alexander Isak is going to be fully fit.

However, Liverpool already seem to be planning for the future with Wirtz’s potential successor now emerging as an option for them to explore.

Liverpool are interested in signing Ethan Nwaneri

For most of the summer transfer window, Liverpool haven’t really gone a couple of days without being linked with a new player.

There are so many areas among the Reds’ ranks that need upgrading but, because they have a limited amount of budget, they need to be confident that the players they bring in have what it takes to improve things in L4.

That’s why both Wirtz and Isak flopping last season was the worst-case scenario for Liverpool.

Thanks to these underperformances, links with new players have started to emerge and now, as per an update from Anfield Sector, Richard Hughes wants to bring Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri to Anfield.

“A player that Liverpool appreciate is Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri,” they wrote.

Ethan Nwaneri could be exactly what Liverpool need to improve their ranks

Liverpool’s attack and midfield performed well below par last term.

Their defence wasn’t up to much scratch either but, at the moment, it seems like Liverpool are focusing on improving those two areas rather than anywhere else.

And, thanks to the number of injuries that the Reds suffered last term, versatility is also key.

Without having versatile players among their ranks that can cover multiple positions, they could just end up in the same injury crisis over, and over again.

That’s why 19-year-old Nwaneri is perfect. Not only can he play on both wings but he can also be used as a number 10, much like Wirtz.

The Englishman is also homegrown and, while Liverpool won’t need to register him until he’s 21 years old, the fact that they wouldn’t have to worry about running out non-homegrown spots to be able to do this is massive.

Obviously these are just rumours at the moment but, a deal for Nwaneri does make a lot sense and, since he’s a very similar profile of player to Wirtz, it could end up being an instant win for Liverpool, especially in Iraola’s system.
