FIFA Names Estádio do Maracanã as Venue for 2027 Women’s World Cup Final

FIFA announced on Thursday that the final for next summer’s Women’s World Cup will occur at Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, July 25, 2027.

The tournament will see matches held in eight Brazilian cities, featuring a total of 32 teams competing in over 64 total matches.

As of now, 18 teams have qualified, including title defenders Spain, along with France, Germany, Argentina, and Japan. Brazil, positioned seventh in FIFA’s latest world rankings, automatically qualifies as the host nation.

The United States women’s team will begin its qualification journey at the Concacaf W Championship in November, held in Texas. The eight participating teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament, with the top four qualifying directly for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, and two proceeding to the inter-confederation playoff.

Estádio do Maracanã, renowned for hosting various significant events including the 1950 World Cup, 2016 Summer Olympics, and the Copa Américas in 2019 and 2021, will also showcase Brazil’s opening match on June 24. The stadium will accommodate five group stage matches, and is set to host a quarterfinal as well as a semifinal.

This event will be notable as the third time a venue has hosted both a men’s and a women’s World Cup final, joining Sweden’s Råsunda Stadium (1958, 1995) and the Rose Bowl (1994, 1999). The Maracanã was previously the site of the 2014 men’s final, where Germany triumphed over Argentina after extra time.

    2027 Women’s World Cup schedule

    Group stage: June 24-July 8
    Round of 16: July 10-13
    Quarterfinals: July 16-17
Semifinals: July 20-21 (Arena Itaquera, São Paulo, Estádio do Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro)
Third-place match: July 24 (Arena Itaquera)
Final: July 25 (Estádio do Maracanã)

FIFA announced on Thursday that next summer’s Women’s World Cup final will take place at Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, July 25, 2027.

Eight Brazilian cities will play host during the tournament, which will see 32 teams competing over 64 total matches.

As of Thursday, 18 teams have already qualified, including reigning champions Spain, as well as France, Germany, Argentina, and Japan. Brazil, ranked seventh in FIFA’s latest world rankings, is automatically qualified as the host nation.

The United States women’s team begins its qualification process at the Concacaf W Championship in November in Texas. The eight teams involved in that competition will take part in a single-elimination tournament with the top four teams making the 2027 Women’s World Cup and two teams moving on to the inter-confederation playoff.

The Maracanã, which has previously hosted events such as the 1950 World Cup, 2016 Summer Olympics, and the 2019 and 2021 Copa Américas, will also be the site of Brazil’s opening match on June 24. The stadium will also see five other group stage games and will serve as the venue for a quarterfinal and semifinal match.
