Some may argue that the team could manage without adding another defender, especially considering the permanent acquisition of Piero Hincapie this summer. Yet, Arteta has reservations about using two left-footed players in central defense, which could lead to complications if White were injured and Mosquera had to shift positions.

Arteta favors Riccardo Calafiori at left-back due to his offensive unpredictability, as Hincapie is also left-footed. Highly regarded 16-year-old academy defender Marli Salmon is part of the squad but is expected to play only limited roles in cup matches as he continues his development.

Highly rated 16-year-old academy defender Marli Salmon is also on the books but is most likely to be used sparingly in cup competitions as he continues to develop.

He also ranked fifth of all defenders in the league for ball carries of more than five metres – and he carried his passing accuracy into the World Cup, as in his seven starts, he registered a 97% pass completion rate.

Does Konsa play when everyone else is fit?

Many Arsenal fans are wondering if Konsa will play regularly when Saliba and Gabriel are fit.

Arteta’s first-choice backline of Timber, Saliba, Gabriel and Calafiori appears hard to break into, on paper.

But the Gunners played 63 games in all competitions as they won the title, reached the final of the Champions League, the final of the Carabao Cup and the quarter-final of the FA Cup.
