West Brom forward Aune Heggebo has been given a two-match suspension for “successful deception of a match official” following a controversial goal scored with his hand during the team’s 2-1 victory against Norwich in the first Sky Bet Championship match of the season.

The Football Association charged the Norwegian player with misconduct under FA Rule E3.1, after last weekend’s match at Carrow Road, where officials allowed Heggebo’s goal in the 75th minute to stand despite protests from Norwich players and staff.

Heggebo contested the charge, but an independent regulatory commission upheld it and imposed the suspension after a hearing.

West Brom commented that this charge is likely “the first of its kind in English football,” resulting from a regulatory change implemented before the 2024-25 season. The club’s appeal argued that the ball had deflected off the Norwich goalkeeper before hitting Heggebo’s arm, suggesting the contact was accidental.

“The club will now write to the FA requesting clarification on how a player is reasonably expected to react should similar circumstances arise in the future,” the Baggies stated. “Albion remain steadfast in their support of Aune, whose character and integrity have been evident throughout his time at The Hawthorns.”

The disputed goal by Heggebo helped West Brom take the lead, with Jimmy Jay-Morgan later adding a second goal just three minutes before the end of the match.

Norwich managed to pull one back in the first minute of added time through Mathias Kvistgaarden, but they could not equalize, allowing West Brom to secure the victory on the first day of the season.

West Brom started the season positively, also achieving a 4-1 win over Rotherham in the Carabao Cup, which sends them through to the second round of the competition.

The Midlands club will host Burnley on Sunday, followed by a matchup against Premier League side Newcastle in the Carabao Cup’s second round at St James’ Park next Wednesday.
