Manchester United Secures Carlos Baleba in $95 Million Transfer from Brighton

Manchester United has finalized the acquisition of midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton for a transfer fee of up to $95 million, marking the conclusion of their significant midfield overhaul during this transfer window.

At 22 years old, the Cameroon international represents the last addition to manager Michael Carrick’s squad, joining previous signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, who together cost a total of $111 million this summer. This trio, along with Bruno Fernandes, transforms United’s midfield, potentially shifting it from a previous vulnerability to a newfound strength.

Fernandes recently set the Premier League record for assists in a single season, notching 21 during the last campaign as Manchester United finished third after a disappointing two seasons that saw them place eighth and fifteenth. The midfield line-up has included Casemiro (33 starts in the Premier League), Kobbie Mainoo (16 starts), and a rotation of Mason Mount (12) and Manuel Ugarte (8).

While Casemiro scored nine goals last season, primarily from set pieces, he and Ugarte focused on providing defensive cover that allowed Fernandes to spearhead attacks in the final third. This approach proved effective in securing a return to the UEFA Champions League. However, Casemiro’s age (now 34 and playing for Inter Miami) and Ugarte’s previous mobility concerns (compounded by an ACL injury at the World Cup) highlighted the need for a more permanent solution in midfield.

Entering the new season, Manchester United seeks to dominate possession more effectively. While the team has shown it can be an attacking threat with Fernandes assisting players like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Amad Diallo, they struggled against teams that employ a more defensive style, which often led to rapid counter-attacks that exploited a slower midfield and defense.

This is where Baleba’s arrival is pivotal. Known for his range, mobility, aggression, and ball-winning capabilities, he brings essential qualities that have been lacking in United’s midfield for over a decade. While he may not be as technically refined as Tielemans, he provides the physical presence necessary to support a lone defensive midfielder, a role Carrick is likely to utilize frequently.

Baleba will need to sharpen his game-reading skills to avoid being overly aggressive and caught out of position during counter-attacks. Nonetheless, his assertiveness is expected to strengthen the team against such situations. Sports commentator Nicholas Mendola recently highlighted Baleba’s role and potential impact on the team dynamics, emphasizing his explosive speed and strong aerial presence, even amidst a dip in performance during his last season at Brighton.

In the new 4-2-3-1 formation, it appears likely that Baleba will work closely with Tielemans, providing the support needed for Fernandes and the rest of the squad to thrive.

Manchester United have completed the signing of midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton for a fee up to $95 million, to complete the Red Devils’ expensive midfielder makeover during the transfer window.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international is the final piece of the puzzle for Michael Carrick’s side after also adding Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos ($111 million combined) this summer. Put the new-boy trio alongside Bruno Fernandes and Man United’s midfield has gone from definite weakness to potential strength, at least one paper.

Why Man United’s midfield needed a rebuild, not just a refresh

Fernandes is fresh off breaking the Premier League’s single-season assist record with 21 last campaign as Man United finished 3rd after two terribly disappointing seasons down in 8th and 15th. The rest of the midfield was made up of Casemiro (33 PL starts), Kobbie Mainoo (16 starts) and a rotating carousel of Mason Mount (12) and Manuel Ugarte (8).

Casemiro ended up scoring nine goals last season (mostly from set pieces), but him and Ugarte were tasked with providing the defensive cover that gave Fernandes the freedom to win games in the final third. It worked well enough to get back in the UEFA Champions League, but Casemiro’s age (34, now at Inter Miami) and Ugarte’s lack of mobility (prior to tearing his ACL at the World Cup), and both player’s lack of forward passing, meant they were a band-aid solution that needed ripping off sooner rather than later.

That’s because this season, Man United have to win more games in which they dominate possession. They proved they can be a devastating attacking team with Fernandes feeding Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo, but they struggled terribly against opponents that defended deeper and flat out refused to give them space in behind, instead setting up their own counter-attacks and — you guessed it — taking advantage of Man United’s much slower defensive midfielders and defenders.

And that’s where Baleba comes in

Range, mobility, aggressive, ball-winning, front-foot defender. Just a few phrases that spring to mind about Baleba, and a few key attributes missing from Man United’s midfield for the last — oh, I don’t know — decade-plus. He’s anything but a smooth and refined technician back there — that’s Tielemans’ job — but if Carrick is to play with a lone defensive midfielder, which he will have to do in 80 percent of their games, then he needs an physical enforcer behind all that beautiful flair.

Baleba will have to read the game in front of him better in order to not get caught in no man’s land against counter-attacks, as he can often be too aggressive stepping higher to challenge for the ball. But, Man United’s new no. 6 being overly aggressive will serve them far better than not aggressive enough when he faces developing counter-attacks.

PST’s Nichoals Mendola summed up Baleba’s game very well last week when news of the deal first broke…

Baleba is not there to bring a ton of offensive playmaking to the table, but he’s going to make life easier for the other 10 players on his team. He’s a ground-covering player with both explosive burst and impressive long speed. Baleba is strong in the air and has elite ball-winning abilities, though last season — his third with Brighton — saw a dip in overall performance. It would seem likely that Baleba will get every chance to work with Tielemans behind Fernandes as a triangle in the 4-2-3-1.
