Manchester United Bounces Back with Strong Victory Against Ipswich

Manchester United secured a convincing win against Ipswich Town, marking a significant turnaround after a challenging previous week. Following the match, United’s manager, Michael Carrick, reflected on the team’s performance during an interview with BBC Match of the Day.

“Results are nice to win like that. I said after the game last week that we were disappointed and it has hurt all week. We managed it well and didn’t make too much of it in the end. We shouldn’t be going down 1-0 at home. We’re going to have setbacks along the way, but it’s how you deal with them. The quality comes and we have a good day because we score goals and win well,” Carrick stated. He praised the second-half performance, highlighting the control the team established.

Carrick also acknowledged the other side of the match, saying, “There are two sides to the coin, obviously. I understand the disappointment for them. It’s one of those things and we took advantage of it.” He commended the efforts of midfielder Bruno Fernandes, noting the strong connection he built with teammates, including Matheus, Kobbie Mainoo, and Youri.

United defender Luke Shaw shared his thoughts with BBC Radio 5 Live, describing the day as ultimately rewarding, despite the struggles leading up to the match. “I’m disappointed in myself for the first goal, someone with that experience I should be doing much better so I take responsibility for that. That’s not me and I was extremely disappointed with myself.” He emphasized the importance of the three points and the positive elements from the team’s performance.

Shaw also expressed admiration for his teammates, particularly Bruno Fernandes. “I kind of run out of words to speak about Bruno to be honest. He is such a good player,” he remarked. Additionally, he highlighted Kobbie Mainoo’s crucial role in the game, calling his performance “world class” and asserting, “For me, he was phenomenal. A real leader in that middle.”

In a notable statistic, it was revealed that Manchester United has won nine of their ten Premier League matches at Old Trafford in 2026, earning more points on home soil than any other team this calendar year. Furthermore, this victory marked the first time United scored five or more goals in a Premier League game after initially trailing 1-0 since July 2020 against Bournemouth.

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Results are nice to win like that. I said after the game last week that we were disappointed and it has hurt all week. We managed it well and didn’t make too much of it in the end. We shouldn’t be going down 1-0 at home. We’re going to have setbacks along the way, but it’s how you deal with them. The quality comes and we have a good day because we score goals and win well.

“They had a couple of moments and we got back to it and took control. The second half was particularly good. Delighted, a lot of positives.

On Ipswich’s misfortune: “There are two sides to the coin, obviously. I understand the disappointment for them. It’s one of those things and we took advantage of it.

“Bruno played well today. You could see the connection through the middle with him, Matheus, Kobbie and Youri. To come back and reset with the week Bruno has had makes it a good one.”

United defender Luke Shaw speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “It was a really good day in the end. It was a tough week so we had to bounce back.

“I’m disappointed in myself for the first goal, someone with that experience I should be doing much better so I take responsibility for that. That’s not me and I was extremely disappointed with myself.

“The second half performance was us, there are lots of good things to take out of that and of course there are always things you can improve on. Today was really important to get the three points.

“It’s never nice when you lose a game, especially the first game of the season when there is a lot of optimism. The best thing to do is block out the noise and focus on ourselves. There’s lots of good things to take for it and push on.

On Bruno Fernandes: “I kind of run out of words to speak about Bruno to be honest. He is such a good player.

“I would like to speak about Kobbie [Mainoo]. I think today he was world class, so, so good. The way he controlled the game and the way he drove us forward.

“I know Bruno scored the hat-trick, but I would put Mainoo down for man of the match. He is so young and it is such a joy to see him growing. For me he was phenomenal A real leader in that middle.”
