Headline: Arsenal’s Max Dowman Suspended for Three Matches Following Red Card Appeal Rejection
Arsenal’s Max Dowman faces a three-match suspension after the club’s appeal against his red card during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood was turned down. The 16-year-old midfielder received a straight red card in the 85th minute of the match, reacting to a heavy challenge from Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal.
Although Dowman did not appear to kick out fully, his foot did connect with Neal, prompting the referee’s decision. The game concluded in a 1-1 draw before Fleetwood triumphed over the Premier League champions 5-3 in a penalty shootout.
Arsenal lodged an appeal for Dowman’s sending-off on Wednesday, but it was unsuccessful. This incident marks the second time this month Dowman has been sent off, having also received a red card while playing for England’s Under-19 team.
As Dowman departed the pitch, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was visibly frustrated, giving the young player a stern look and seemingly expressing his discontent with a remark.
After the match, Arteta commented, “When we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate. It was very clear.”
Dowman was penalized for violent conduct, which the game’s regulations describe as using excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not contesting for the ball, regardless of whether contact occurs.
The Gunners are currently short on attacking options, with key players Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, and Noni Madueke sidelined due to injuries. Arteta’s team will return to Premier League action against Liverpool on Sunday.
