Construction at Generali Stadium, presented by Inter and Milan, set to start in 2028

Inter and Milan Unveil Plans for New Generali Stadium in San Siro

Inter and AC Milan have formally introduced plans for their new 71,500-seat arena, named the Generali Stadium. The stadium will showcase an innovative X-frame design and a double-curved roof, with construction anticipated to commence in 2028.

This project has been in development for over a decade, but several years of delays led to the previous design being abandoned, necessitating a new approach.

The new designs were presented at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan this evening, created by architects Foster+Partners and MANICA through a collaboration between Lord Norman Foster and David Manica. These architects were also responsible for the redesign of London’s Wembley Stadium.

Generali Stadium Plan Unveiled

As confirmed earlier, it will be called the Generali Stadium, after the Italian insurance company acquired the naming rights for a reported €26 million per year over the next 25 years.

This deal could total €650 million, placing it second in Europe only to Atletico Madrid’s agreement with Riyadh Air for the Wanda Metropolitano, which nets €28-33 million annually.

In European competitions, however, the stadium will be referred to as Milano Stadium.

The new stadium’s exterior will showcase a concrete X-frame, drawing inspiration from Milan’s famous Duomo Cathedral while supporting the double-curved roof.

This design will highlight the two ‘Curvas’, with the Nord dedicated to Inter fans and the Sud for AC Milan supporters.

The seating will feature two tiers, creating a continuous 360-degree bowl that promises excellent sightlines for all spectators. The seating will incline up to 37 degrees.

LED panels will illuminate the stadium’s exterior in various colors depending on which team is playing that day.

Architect insists new Generali Stadium ‘will be even more San Siro’ than it is today

Both clubs came together to purchase the land that includes the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in November 2025, receiving approval only recently after final go-ahead after appeals to block the sale were rejected.

Notably, the timeline indicates construction will start in 2028, with the stadium aiming to host its first match in the 2031/32 season— a slight delay from the previously proposed 2027 start date.

The structure aims to be ready in time for matches during the EURO 2032 tournament, which Italy will co-host with Turkiye.

This project is not just a stadium initiative but also represents an urban regeneration effort across 281,000 square metres, incorporating new public areas, green spaces, and retail establishments.

This facility will also accommodate concerts and major events, following the long-time tradition of the San Siro venue.
