USMNT Faces Gio Reyna Injury Setback, Calls Up Jack McGlynn for Nations League Quarterfinals

Gio Reyna Withdraws from U.S. National Team Due to Thigh Injury; Jack McGlynn Called Up

Gio Reyna has officially withdrawn from the U.S. national team’s training camp and upcoming CONCACAF Nations League matches following a thigh injury sustained shortly after scoring for French club Strasbourg on Friday.

Jack McGlynn, who has made a significant impact with Stoke City in the English Championship this season, replaces Reyna in the squad. This marks McGlynn’s first call-up in 14 months, earning him recognition for his strong performance that has helped position Stoke at the top of the league standings.

Reyna, who played a crucial role during the U.S. team’s recent sweep of four friendlies, netted his third league goal in 10 matches in the 67th minute before departing the field just three minutes later due to an injury, during Strasbourg’s 3-1 loss to Toulouse. He had been expected to play a vital role in the midfield for the upcoming Nations League quarterfinals against Haiti.

The U.S. national team’s camp is set to open Monday at the training center near Atlanta, with the first leg of the Nations League matches scheduled for next Saturday in Miami, followed by a deciding game on November 17 in Cincinnati. Reyna’s absence will increase responsibilities for teammates Malik Tillman and Sebastian Berhalter.

In his debut season abroad, the 23-year-old McGlynn has become a key player on the right wing for Stoke City, which currently holds a record of 9-4-2 and shares the top position in points with Birmingham City and Middlesbrough.

Just before the announcement of his call-up, McGlynn contributed to Stoke’s recent 2-1 victory over Portsmouth, marking his third consecutive match with a goal. With a total of five goals and two assists in the last nine games, McGlynn is just one goal short of his career high.

Originally from Queens, McGlynn joined Stoke in September after nearly two seasons with the Houston Dynamo and four seasons with the Philadelphia Union. He has accumulated two goals and two assists in 13 senior appearances for the U.S. and is also part of the under-23 team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In a related development, Toulouse center back Mark McKenzie received a call-up to the national team after replacing George Campbell, who is dealing with a groin injury. McKenzie, who participated in the World Cup this summer, had not been included in the roster for the recent friendlies but scored his first goal for club or country since February 2025 just hours after being summoned by Coach Mauricio Pochettino.
