Barcelona Targets Defensive Reinforcements Ahead of January Transfer Window
Barcelona has identified Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol and Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United as potential targets to strengthen their defense in January, according to reports from Mundo Deportivo. The Blaugranas aim to address defensive shortcomings that were highlighted by recent defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, which put pressure on head coach Hansi Flick’s squad.
Barcelona began the season strong, recording 11 consecutive victories that included nine wins in La Liga and two in the Champions League. However, their momentum faltered following losses in both the Champions League clash at Parc des Princes and the El Clasico showdown, raising doubts about their capability to compete against top European teams.
Last summer, the club’s sporting department was active in revamping the squad, acquiring players such as Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, and Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal to enhance their offensive lineup. Additionally, they secured Ballon d’Or winner Rodri from Manchester City to enrich their midfield and retained Joao Cancelo after a successful loan spell.
Despite signing Dominik Livakovic to support first-choice goalkeeper Joan Garcia, financial constraints hindered Barcelona from reinforcing their defensive unit. Plans for acquiring another center-back and a full-back fell through after the club struggled to generate sufficient funds from player transfers.
In light of recent defeats, the urgency to bolster the defense has escalated. Barcelona has faced similar issues in previous European contests, particularly against Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan, where counter-attacks from opponents proved damaging.
The club is now in search of an experienced center-back who can seamlessly integrate into the team. However, their transfer endeavors will largely rely on player sales and available financial resources. Gvardiol emerges as the top target for the club, but with a contract extending until 2031, negotiating a deal is likely to be challenging. Similarly, Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni is also on Barcelona’s radar, yet convincing Inter to part ways with the player mid-season will be difficult given that his contract runs until 2028.
A more attainable option appears to be Martinez, whose contract with Manchester United expires in June. Although he could potentially be available in January, concerns regarding his injury history may complicate the situation for Barcelona.
