Celtic Faces Complications Over £3m Loan Star: Should They Keep Him?

Celtic’s Paulo Bernardo Faces Challenges on Loan at Górnik Zabrze

Celtic’s midfielder Paulo Bernardo’s loan to Górnik Zabrze has sparked discussions about the team’s future midfield options following his departure in August. With Martin O’Neill opting for other alternatives at Parkhead, Bernardo’s position within the squad diminished as summer signing Mika Baur emerged as a contender for central roles.

While the loan provided Bernardo with the desired regular playing time, the challenges in Poland have exceeded his expectations. Górnik Zabrze has made an impressive start this season, currently sitting second in the Ekstraklasa. However, the competitive nature of the league has left little room for ease during matches.

In an interview with Polish outlet Roosevelta 81, the 24-year-old acknowledged, “It’s very difficult for me. I never imagined it would be this tough.” He noted that Górnik must exert maximum effort to secure points, particularly while competing at the top of the table.

Despite establishing himself as a regular starter, Bernardo’s personal performance numbers have not met his aspirations. He has yet to score or assist in the league during this season. Across all competitions, he has participated in 15 matches and logged 1,019 minutes, contributing two assists in European qualifying. His disappointment is evident as he remarked, “The only frustrating thing for me here is that I have not managed to score yet.”

Bernardo emphasized the need to keep pushing, creating opportunities, and finding space as he seeks his first goal. Roosevelta 81 has been monitoring his loan, reporting that a potential £3 million buy option may determine his future with Górnik Zabrze beyond this season.

Should Celtic protect Bernardo’s future rather than accept a £3m exit?

As discussions continue, Celtic may need to reconsider the reported £3 million buy option before permanently relinquishing Bernardo’s rights. His loan has indeed allowed him to gain necessary minutes on the pitch, but a lack of goals does not overshadow his experience at Celtic or his capacity to battle for a spot on the team. Last season, he made 28 league appearances, scoring twice and assisting three times, before his role was diminished.

Although O’Neill has shown a preference for Baur, Callum McGregor, and Benjamin Nygren as his first-choice midfielders, the demands of a full season typically bring about injuries, suspensions, and fixture congestion. Celtic must focus on having credible depth, not merely a settled starting trio.

If future management adjustments alter the midfield structure, Bernardo could present a valuable option without necessitating a substantial transfer fee. The club’s board should carefully evaluate his development and the conditions of the buy clause before making a definitive decision; inexpensive sales may lead to higher replacement costs for a player already within their ranks.
