Derry Battles Back to Draw with Sligo in Final League Match

Derry City Comes Back to Draw 2-2 with Sligo Rovers in Premier Division Finale

A much-changed Derry City team managed to secure a 2-2 draw against relegated Sligo Rovers in their final Premier Division match of the season.

Sligo Rovers took an early lead with first-half goals from Gareth McElroy and Ryan O’Kane, establishing a comfortable advantage before halftime.

In the second half, Derry Capitalized on a numerical advantage after Sligo’s Kaiyne Woolery received a red card shortly after the restart. Seventeen-year-old Terence Doherty stepped up to score a late double, saving a point for his team.

The Candystripes concluded the season in fifth place, finishing with 48 points from their 36 matches.

Attention now turns to the upcoming FAI Cup final against Waterford, scheduled for Sunday, 8 November, at Aviva Stadium.

McElroy, the captain, opened the scoring for Sligo in the 25th minute by firing in his second goal of the season after Derry failed to clear a free-kick. O’Kane then doubled the lead with a well-placed shot in the 37th minute. However, Woolery’s dismissal just three minutes into the second half shifted the momentum.

Doherty found the net in the 77th minute, narrowing the gap. He then equalized with a header five minutes later, marking a remarkable comeback for Derry City.
