Como Secures Historic 9-1 Victory in Champions League Match Against Lens
Como, Italy – In a remarkable display of talent, Como secured their first ever Champions League away victory with an astounding 9-1 win against Lens. Following previous victories at home, the Lariani aimed to build on their momentum, having triumphed 4-1 against both RB Leipzig and Manchester United. However, they faced a setback with a 3-2 loss to Feyenoord, leading to heightened anticipation for this away match.
The night unfolded in a surprising fashion, with Tasos Douvikas scoring a hat-trick alongside goals from Nico Paz, Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina, and promising debutant Matteo Papaccioli. This match marked a significant achievement, as it established a record for an Italian team, scoring nine away goals, a feat never before accomplished in the Champions League or its predecessor, the European Cup.
Cesc Fabregas, manager of Como, expressed his pride in the team’s performance. “It is a wonderful night for Como, for all our fans and many lads here who are at the start of their careers, but they need to keep their feet on the ground, be humble, keep learning and not think everything will go well from here on,” he commented.
As Como sits fourth in the Champions League standings halfway through the league phase, Fabregas was cautiously optimistic. “I’m happy, this is football and everything went our way. The lads did well; now we have to prepare for a very important match on Sunday against Scudetto holders Inter.”
The victory marks Como’s sixth consecutive win in all competitions, a promising sign as they prepare to face tough opponents in the upcoming Serie A match. Douvikas, who continues to impress by scoring in every Champions League game, now leads the tournament in goals.
Despite the resounding win, Como’s defense was not without issues, as they surrendered a goal after substituting players. “I am angry over the goal we conceded… It was scored by a former teammate of mine, and I told him I’d never seen you score a goal like that before! It was honestly a great goal,” Fabregas admitted.
Looking forward, Como will face AEK Athens at home, followed by a tough away match against Real Betis, and ultimately conclude their group stage with matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona in January. “There is a long way to go… all I am focused on is recovering the injured players, because we are missing so many in attack especially,” Fabregas stated.
As Como celebrates this historic win, their focus now shifts to the challenges ahead, aiming to sustain their success through diligence and teamwork.
