Barcelona Considers January Signing of Tottenham Defender as Top Target

Barcelona Considers Strengthening Defense with Pedro Porro as Target

Barcelona is contemplating the acquisition of a new full-back during the January transfer window, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro emerging as a leading candidate, in addition to the search for a centre-back. According to journalist Roger Torello from Mundo Deportivo, the club remains open to strengthening both defensive positions if the right opportunities arise.

Currently, the priority remains a centre-back, as Hansi Flick’s defensive roster has been impacted by injuries to Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Jules Kounde. However, the need to add a full-back has gained urgency following recent defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Barcelona Open to Signing Another Defender

The initial defensive recruitment plans for Barcelona included targeting both a centre-back and a full-back last summer, in addition to Joao Cancelo. However, the club could not execute this full plan due to unfulfilled anticipated departures, leaving Flick with limited defensive options currently.

The situation has turned more critical due to recent injury updates. Eric Garcia is expected to miss three to four weeks due to a thigh injury, while Christensen continues to struggle with physical issues, and Kounde is sidelined with an ankle sprain. With only Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin available for centre-back roles, Flick has found himself constrained in his defensive selections.

Pedro Porro Emerges as Barcelona’s Preferred Full-Back Target

In light of these developments, Pedro Porro has surfaced as a primary target for Barcelona’s recruitment strategy. The 27-year-old Spanish international is currently making a name for himself at Tottenham and represents the ideal addition for the Catalan club.

However, signing him in January could prove challenging, as Tottenham extended Porro’s contract until 2026 with an option for a further year, thereby locking him in at the North London club until 2031. For Barcelona, pursuing Porro in the summer transfer window may be a more feasible option.

Financial considerations play a critical role in this evaluation, as Barcelona will need to create resources through player sales to alleviate budget constraints before pursuing new signings. While Porro’s status as the top target is notable, there are no confirmed agreements, formal offers, or indications from Tottenham that they are open to negotiating his exit.
