Headline: Real Madrid Faces Broadcast Blackout in China Due to Kylian Mbappe Controversy
Real Madrid’s solid recent performances on the field have been overshadowed by an escalating controversy involving star player Kylian Mbappe and China.
This issue originated from a lighthearted comment made by the French forward, which has now morphed into a significant commercial predicament.
According to Mundo Deportivo, major broadcasters holding La Liga rights in China have imposed new restrictions following the incident.
While other Spanish clubs, including Barcelona, will continue to receive some television coverage, Real Madrid’s matches are set for a complete blackout.
More Stringent Restrictions on Real Madrid Than Rivals
China Media Group, which oversees the state broadcaster CCTV, has suspended coverage of the entire league temporarily.
The channel also dismissed the initial apologies from both Mbappe and Real Madrid, calling them inadequate given the circumstances.
“We will listen to their words, but we will watch their actions much more closely,” an unidentified representative remarked.

In contrast, Migu, a subsidiary of China Mobile that holds La Liga broadcasting rights until 2030, has decided to take a different path.
This platform plans to continue airing all the league matches, except those involving Real Madrid.
Consequently, Barcelona and other La Liga teams will still have their games shown in China via Migu.
Controversy Surrounding Mbappe Triggers Significant Commercial Issues
The dispute initially arose when Mbappe referenced a meme that likened him to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, labeling Mao as a dictator.
Although he later expressed regret, the Madrid striker has already incurred losses in three sponsorship agreements in China.

For Real Madrid, the ramifications extend beyond Mbappe’s personal endorsements. The club owns a share of the player’s image rights, thereby impacting their financial situation as well.
Though the exact financial repercussions remain uncertain, ongoing restrictions could diminish Madrid’s commercial footprint in China.
The club has conveyed its respect for its Chinese supporters, yet the situation continues to escalate without resolution in sight.
Real Madrid is hopeful for a swift resolution to restore its diplomatic and commercial ties with China.
