FC Barcelona Dominates Deportivo Alaves with 6-1 Victory
After experiencing two consecutive losses, FC Barcelona bounced back in impressive fashion, defeating Deportivo Alaves 6-1 at home.
The match showcased a commanding performance from the Catalan side, with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha each scoring twice. Fermin Lopez and Anthony Gordon also contributed to the scoreline with additional goals.
Following the game, coach Hansi Flick expressed his satisfaction with Barcelona’s performance, highlighting several key moments from the match, particularly Yamal’s efforts after a disappointing snub at the Ballon d’Or awards.
Flick Praises Yamal and Raphinha
Hansi Flick remarked on the team’s overall display against a defensively challenging opponent.
“We played well and were very focused. We knew Alaves would defend well, but we dominated the first half at a high level and the result confirms it,” he stated (h/t Diario SPORT).
Yamal, who netted two goals before being substituted, received special mention after his Ballon d’Or disappointment, finishing third behind Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane.
“When you score two goals, it’s easier to get substituted. I spoke to him at halftime. He’s regained his confidence and had many one-on-one situations. He played a fantastic match,” Flick noted.
Flick also praised his captain, acknowledging their standout play: “Lamine and Raphinha were fantastic. We reacted very well and we’re on the right track.”
De Jong Shines in Unusual Role
Given a series of injuries among defenders, Flick found an alternative solution by placing Frenkie de Jong in a centre-back position.
“We have many injured defenders and we don’t know when they’ll be back. I asked Frenkie if he could play centre-back and he said yes, that he wanted to help the team,” Flick explained.
Additionally, he commended academy product Brian Farinas for his performance, expressing contentment with his development.
“I’m very happy with his progress. He’s played at a high level and connects very well with Lamine. He deserved these minutes because he trains very well and his attitude is outstanding. That’s exactly what I want from my players,” he added.
Flick Reaches Personal Milestone
The match marked a personal achievement for Flick, as it was his 100th win as Barcelona’s manager – a goal he might have preferred to secure against Real Madrid in the previous match.
“It’s incredible. First we reached 100 matches and now 100 wins. It’s fantastic,” he remarked.
Reflecting on his favorite victory from these 100 wins, he fondly remembered his initial Clasico success.
“Perhaps that win in Madrid. Winning there in my first year was incredible and it brings back very good memories,” he shared.
On the injury situation, Flick remained cautious about the returns of Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, and Jules Kounde, hoping at least one or two would be back soon.
“We still don’t know who will be able to return. I hope to have at least one or two back. Christensen is very close to training with the team, but we don’t want to take any risks,” he said.
Finally, Flick indicated that Gavi’s absence was a precaution due to a yellow card, rather than an injury concern.
“He had a yellow card and we didn’t want to take any risks. It was a great opportunity for Bernal to play in that position, and it suited all of us,” he concluded.
