Bryan Mbeumo: Man Utd Squad Remains United After Lisandro Martinez’s Red Card

Mbeumo Highlights Unity Among United Squad Following Defeat to Chelsea

In the wake of a challenging loss for Manchester United, Bryan Mbeumo emphasized the trust still present among the team’s players after Lisandro Martinez received a controversial red card during a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This match marked United’s third consecutive loss, leaving them in 17th place in the Premier League standings as they navigate a difficult period.

United’s situation worsened as they faced their ninth winless outing across all competitions, a trend not seen in 38 years. Martinez received two bookings within two minutes during the second half, coinciding with Morgan Rogers opening the scoring for Chelsea.

Martinez, who recently expressed frustration over a disappointing summer transfer window, now leaves manager Michael Carrick in a precarious position as he seeks to steer the team through a tumultuous stretch.

The future of Carrick remains uncertain heading into Tuesday’s Champions League match against Roma, though he has indicated he does not anticipate immediate changes to his role.

Reflecting on the match, Mbeumo said, “A lot of disappointment. I thought we played a solid game, a good first half especially… the mentality, the work-rate. I think (a win is) going to come.”

During the game, Martinez had already been cautioned for a rough challenge on Rogers. With the team trailing 1-0, he unnecessarily engaged in foul play against Wesley Fofana, resulting in a second yellow card and a penalty for Chelsea. Cole Palmer successfully converted the penalty, adding to United’s woes.

Despite the defeat, Mbeumo refrained from placing blame on Martinez or any teammate for mistakes made. “I feel like everyone linked together, even some who made mistakes, we were there for him,” he remarked. “We still trust everyone. With the man down, we still had some frustrations at the end. But I think we have done everything as a team… we could have been up early in the game, but that’s a positive to take out of this game.”

United exhibited a stronger performance in the first half but were unable to capitalize on their chances, with players Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo notably amongst those who squandered opportunities.

“There was a lack of chances in the last couple of games, whereas we had good ones (on Saturday), so things can still be positive for the next few days,” Mbeumo concluded, highlighting the team’s resilience in the face of adversity.
