Mowbray Compares Matos’ Swansea to Klopp’s Liverpool

Swansea City Dominates Blackburn Rovers with 4-0 Victory

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray remarked that Swansea City, under the guidance of Vitor Matos, reminded him of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool after their stunning performance in a 4-0 win on Saturday.

Despite arriving in good form, Blackburn struggled against Swansea, who achieved their largest victory of the season at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Mowbray noted that Swansea’s success stemmed from their “amazingly good” intensity, evoking memories of Klopp’s Liverpool style.

Since taking the helm at Swansea last November, Matos has emphasized a high-pressing game, which he honed during five years on Klopp’s staff.

“In my previous Blackburn team, particularly during Covid, we played Liverpool a few times,” Mowbray said. “We weren’t in the Premier League, but we faced Liverpool twice at Anfield and once at Ewood Park.”

“Those Liverpool teams were incredible because they didn’t give you a moment to breathe, and I see similar traits in this Swansea side. It felt like three players were pressuring every member of our team.”

With this victory, Swansea currently sits second in the Championship, collecting 26 points from their opening 13 matches this season.

Mowbray, who has extensive experience at 62 years old, believes Swansea possesses the potential to challenge for promotion this season. However, he cautioned that their tactical approach might not always yield results.

“Coaches from the top teams will recognize that you’re the best at high pressing,” he explained about Swansea’s strategy. “They might not take risks, opting to play it safe and preventing you from building plays.”

Mowbray added that teams will likely adapt to Swansea’s pressing style, forcing them into long passes and direct plays. “It’s great coaching and a commendable philosophy, but there are coaches in this league that will take notice,” he said.

During the match, Stephen Eustaquio, Joseph Opoku, and Filip Lissah netted goals that put Swansea ahead 3-0 at halftime. Ross Stewart added a fourth goal in the second half, sealing Blackburn’s heaviest defeat since April 2024.

Mowbray expressed frustration that his players failed to adjust to Swansea’s game plan, despite prior preparations. “We have played well this year, but against that level of intensity, we really struggled,” he stated. “We shouldn’t have been playing around our penalty area, giving a team that excels at pressing the opportunity to exploit our weaknesses.”
