Guernsey FC Manager Expresses Relief After 2-1 Victory Over Bexhill United
Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance expressed his relief following a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Bexhill United, despite his team being reduced to 10 men. The Green Lions secured their fifth consecutive win, maintaining their seventh position in the Southern Combination Premier Division while holding games in hand over several teams above them.
Bexhill, currently in eighth place, took an early lead when Ryan Moir scored in the 10th minute. However, Guernsey equalized just five minutes later, with Sam Murray finding the net after Ben Solway’s cross hit the post, resulting in a tap-in for Murray on his 150th appearance for the club.
The turning point came four minutes into the second half when Will Fazakerley headed in from a corner taken by Ross Allen, putting Guernsey ahead. However, the situation turned tense when Fazakerley was sin-binned 15 minutes later for dissent. Adding to the pressure, Jacob Fallaize received a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity midway through the second half, leaving Guernsey briefly with only nine players on the field.
Despite the challenges, goalkeeper Seb Sheppard made crucial saves to help secure the win. Vance reflected on the match, stating, “I think it probably could have been a little bit easier. We had spells in the game where we controlled them, controlled the pitch areas, particularly when we changed at the back.” He acknowledged that while they dominated the ball, the team struggled to capitalize on their chances.
“I was relieved for the final whistle,” Vance added, highlighting his concerns about missed opportunities and the impact it might have had on the match outcome.
Guernsey FC Women Achieve 10-0 Victory at Home
In another exciting match, Guernsey FC Women celebrated their first home victory of the season, convincingly defeating Whitchurch United 10-0 at Victoria Park. This impressive win propelled the Green Lionesses to sixth place in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division One South.
Calleigh Hedley opened the scoring with two goals within the first 15 minutes. Amy Dallamore added a third goal midway through the first half, while two quick goals from Candice Bougourd and Adrienne Leech ensured a commanding 5-0 lead by halftime.
After the break, Dallamore netted her second goal just four minutes into the second half, setting the stage for Ruby Smith, who scored a remarkable hat-trick in 22 minutes to push the score to 9-0 with 12 minutes remaining. Hedley capped off the day with her own hat-trick, converting a penalty in the 83rd minute, as Guernsey reached double figures for the second time this season, having previously won 10-2 at Burlesdon a month ago.
