Flick Discusses Raphinha, Gavi, Christensen, Balde, and Farinas Before Barcelona vs Aston Villa матч

Barcelona Set to Host Aston Villa in UEFA Champions League Clash

Barcelona is gearing up to host Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League at the Spotify Camp Nou tomorrow, following a decisive victory over Alaves in La Liga. The team, under the guidance of Hansi Flick, seeks to bounce back after a setback against reigning champions PSG in their previous match in the competition. With aspirations to secure a spot in the top eight, the players are keen to deliver a strong performance.

In a pre-match press conference, Flick addressed several topics, especially the current injury status of his squad and the overall form ahead of the crucial encounter with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

Managing Injuries and Facing Aston Villa

Flick emphasized the team’s approach to handling injuries within the squad.

“Dealing with injuries requires focus, and we’re managing it well,” he stated. Reflecting on the victory against Alaves, he noted, “There was a mistake at the end – that happens sometimes – but I saw good work and conviction.”

He also provided an update on Andreas Christensen, who trained recently but is still being assessed for tomorrow’s game. “We’ll have to wait and see. He trained yesterday, but only on positional work. He’s fine, but we’ll have to wait until the weekend,” Flick mentioned.

With an important match against Atletico Madrid looming, Flick reiterated his focus on Aston Villa, recognizing the quality of their opponent. “Unai Emery is one of the best managers in Europe; they have a clear idea of how to play both in defense and attack. It’ll be a tough match. The Champions League is special and the opposition are top-class,” he said.

Flick commended Emery’s management style, highlighting how well Aston Villa plays. “They are confident on the ball and have a solid defensive structure. Jackson is performing at an incredible level. It’ll be a tough match against a great manager.”

Alejandro Balde and Gavi’s Situation

Concerns regarding Alejandro Balde’s role in the team have emerged, with suggestions of a potential January departure due to decreased playing time. However, Flick reassured fans that Balde is still part of his plans and that he is committed to helping him regain his confidence.

“What’s happening to him is normal; when you don’t play often, you lack confidence. I see him training well, but we have to decide what’s best for the team, and Joao Cancelo is in great form,” Flick explained.

There are also similar worries about midfielder Gavi, who has had limited opportunities this season. “We all know his quality, and Gavi is always an option. However, once the match starts, that option might disappear, and you can’t always stick to your initial plan. I’ve spoken to him, and it’s essential that he has confidence,” said Flick.

Team Form and Strategy

Amid criticism that Barcelona has struggled against top-tier teams this season, Flick responded by pointing to their overall performance. “No, against Real Madrid the result could have been different, and the same against PSG. At this level, anything can happen. We’ve won 11 matches in a row,” he said.

Flick acknowledged that defeats often capture attention but maintained confidence in his squad’s abilities. “We need to focus on Aston Villa and the Champions League. We want to be among the top eight.”

He expressed understanding of the scrutiny from the media, indicating that the spotlight on defeats is a common reaction. “It’s normal to focus on defeats or weaknesses; if I were in the press, I’d do the same, but defeats don’t change anything.”

Addressing defensive vulnerabilities, he noted the challenges posed by missing several key players in defense but expressed optimism about the team pulling together, especially after their last match. “I hope Eric, Kounde, and Christensen are fit again after the break, and even Olmo. Espart, not yet,” he detailed.

Flick praised the performance of Lamine Yamal and Brian Farinas, who displayed strong chemistry against Alaves. “They link up well, they’re friends, and they did very well against Alaves. Farinas is an option for tomorrow, but there are others,” he remarked.

Reflecting on Raphinha’s contributions, he affirmed his satisfaction with the player’s progress this season. “He’s our captain. He’s shown his quality right from the start of the season. I’m very happy to have him performing at this level.”
