UCL: Man Utd Edges Roma 3-2 in Another European Collapse for Giallorossi

Manchester United Overcomes Roma in Intense Champions League Clash

Roma faltered once again, letting slip a two-goal lead in a heart-stopping 3-2 defeat to Manchester United. After a first-half dominated by Roma’s attack, the team repeated past mistakes that led to their undoing.

Just hours before the match, Roma faced a significant setback when goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini injured his back. With Mile Svilar, Paulo Dybala, Manu Koné, and Lorenzo Pellegrini already sidelined, the team had to draft in third-choice goalkeeper Devis Vasquez for his club debut. The Giallorossi showcased an offensive strategy with players like Rodrigo Mora, Devyne Rensch, and Leonardo Balerdi on the pitch.

Meanwhile, Manchester United experienced their own turmoil, searching for a win after going without since September 10 and enduring three consecutive losses, including a 4-1 Champions League hammering at Como. With Lenny Yoro back from suspension, the absence of Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu, Marcus Rashford, Manuel Ugarte, and Luke Shaw hindered United’s preparation.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

The match began with Roma taking an early lead as their high press forced a mistake in United’s midfield, allowing Rodrigo Mora to assist Matías Soulé, who scored in the 11th minute.

Roma doubled their advantage in the 18th minute when Soulé won a penalty, which Donyell Malen converted after outsmarting goalkeeper Sam Lammens.

Despite dominating the pace of the game, Roma missed further chances that could have widened the gap. A critical moment occurred when Malen’s promising run was curtailed, and Rensch’s subsequent injury forced him off the pitch.

As Roma held their ground, a footrace down the right ended in misfortune for Baleba, who sustained a hamstring injury. However, Manchester United gained a glimmer of hope when Mateus Cunha earned a penalty after a trip, but Vasquez saved Bruno Fernandes’ initial attempt. A subsequent VAR review led to the penalty being retaken when Cristian’s subsequent clearance encroached into the area. Fernandes made no mistake the second time, bringing the score to 2-1.

United continued to push for an equaliser, with chances going begging and a near miss off the upright raising the tension in the stadium. Defenders Wesley and Cristante made crucial goal-line clearances to deny the home side further opportunities.

The equaliser came when a defensive error by Leonardo Balerdi gifted Matheus Cunha a chance, and he leveled the score at 2-2 with a low shot. This marked a significant turnaround, as Roma’s prior two-goal lead evaporated.

In a dramatic closing sequence, Matheus Cunha exploited yet another lapse in Roma’s defence, scoring again just minutes later to tilt the match in Manchester United’s favour. Cunha was booked for his celebrations and later received a second yellow card for a foul late in the game.
