Pascal De Maesschalck has emphasized the importance of player recruitment in his strategy for the Arsenal academy, arguing that even top-notch facilities cannot compensate for bringing in unsuitable players.

The academy director, who joined from Strasbourg this summer, has shared insights on his recruitment approach, noting that analyzing matches is just one aspect of evaluating potential candidates.

For De Maesschalck, off-the-pitch character matters as well.

“I watch many matches,” he remarked. “I also build relationships with the players and their parents because understanding the players personally is important. It remains a ‘people’s business’.

“Recruitment is the most critical component. You can have excellent facilities, but without the right players, it won’t succeed.”

In an interview with Sporza, De Maesschalck recognized that the role at Arsenal presents unique challenges compared to his experiences in Belgium and France.

The current regulations in English football, particularly those introduced after Brexit, present a different landscape, even if the core principles of player development remain consistent.

“That represents my current challenge,” he explained. “Can my approach succeed at the highest level?

“Don’t forget, working in the Premier League is completely different from my experiences in Belgium or France. The Brexit situation means that the rules vary significantly.

“The game and players are the same, but they are presented in a completely different way. That is my challenge.”

Arseblog News indicates that the recent recruitment efforts were primarily focused on players currently residing in Great Britain and Ireland.

Yet, locating these players is just the first step. The challenge now is to nurture them to meet the expectations set by Mikel Arteta. De Maesschalck has been particularly impressed by the training methods employed by the Arsenal manager.

“His training sessions are unlike any I have seen before,” De Maesschalck stated. “I have observed many sessions from various coaches.

“The level of detail is remarkable. When discussing football with him, it’s always about specifics, discipline, and respect… He is truly a winner, yet also a very approachable person.”
