Headline: Frenkie de Jong Seeks Starting Role for Barcelona Ahead of Atletico Madrid Clash
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is eager to secure a starting position as the team readies for an important La Liga match against Atletico Madrid this weekend. The Dutch player has recently returned to action after a lengthy injury layoff and feels prepared to contribute to the team’s performance.
De Jong’s readiness comes in light of teammate Rodri’s injury, which has created a vacancy in the midfield. Rodri is expected to be sidelined for approximately one month due to a hamstring issue sustained during a match against Aston Villa. The 30-year-old, who joined Barcelona last summer, has been a key player in midfield, starting ten of the club’s 15 games this season.
With Rodri’s absence, Marc Bernal appears to be the frontrunner to fill the gap in the starting lineup. However, De Jong is determined to make his case for inclusion in the upcoming fixture.
After undergoing a knee injury that kept him off the field for three months, De Jong made his comeback against Real Madrid in late October. Since then, he has been steadily regaining match fitness, participating in three matches but not in his typical deeper midfield role. In recent games, he has played 82 minutes as a centre-back and had more advanced midfield responsibilities.
De Jong expressed his strong desire to start against Atletico Madrid, stating, “I’m feeling great, really strong, raring to go and very motivated. What’s done is done.” He acknowledged the challenge of returning from a long injury spell but emphasized his eagerness to start: “I’d like to start matches from the off, but we have to bear in mind that I’ve been out for a long time and that’s up to the coaching staff.”
The decision now rests with Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, who must choose whether to continue with Bernal in the midfield or reinstate De Jong as they prepare for this crucial matchup.
