Arda Guler Misses Real Madrid’s Match Against AEK Athens
Arda Guler will be notably absent from Real Madrid’s lineup as they take on AEK Athens on Matchday 4 of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League. The Turkish midfielder has emerged as a vital component of José Mourinho’s strategy and a significant factor in the team’s recent successes.
Real Madrid enters this match in Greece following three consecutive victories in their European campaign, presenting them with an opportunity to edge closer to direct qualification for the round of 16. However, the Portuguese manager will need to navigate this challenge without Guler, especially with an upcoming demanding fixture at Mestalla.
Why Is Arda Guler Not Playing in AEK Athens vs. Real Madrid?
Guler’s absence is a strategic choice made by Mourinho, who has opted to give him rest amid a busy match schedule. The coach believes it is essential to manage the midfielder’s minutes after numerous games, leading to his exclusion from the travel roster for the trip to Greece.
The midfielder is in good health and not facing any injuries or physical issues. His absence is solely precautionary, especially given Real Madrid’s strong start in the Champions League, where they have secured nine points from their first three encounters.
When Does Arda Guler Play Again With Real Madrid?
The midfielder is anticipated to return to the squad this Saturday against Valencia at Mestalla, as part of the team’s lineup before the FIFA international break. Since he is physically fit, his return does not hinge on any recovery period.
The upcoming match against Valencia represents the coaching staff’s next focus, aiming to feature their key players in a challenging La Liga match. Whether Guler starts will ultimately depend on Mourinho’s decision.
Although Guler’s absence leaves Real Madrid without one of their primary playmakers, his growing significance in the team this season has established him as a crucial midfield reference for Mourinho. Nevertheless, Madrid stands in a favorable position, having achieved three consecutive Champions League victories and an opportunity to accumulate 12 points. The match against AEK Athens will serve as a test of the team’s collective resolve in his absence before facing their next La Liga challenge.
