Headline: Enzo Maresca Stresses Need for Depth as Manchester City Prepares to Face RB Leipzig
Manchester City continues to rely on the prowess of striker Erling Haaland, who has scored 13 goals across all competitions this season. Nonetheless, coach Enzo Maresca emphasizes the necessity for additional scoring support within the squad. Currently, Rayan Cherki leads with six goals, followed by Phil Foden with four, Antoine Semenyo with two, and Floyd Samba, also with two. Maresca points out that while Haaland has a remarkable track record, there will be matches where he may be less influential, and a lack of depth in scoring could jeopardize their points total.
“For sure, when you have Erling on the pitch, it’s better because he’s going to score goals, or you know he’s always there close,” Maresca commented. “At the same time, we cannot rely on Erling for every game. We need also the rest to score goals. But, again, I think the last game against Brighton was the only game of the season where we didn’t score. But, for sure, if Erling is on the pitch we are happy.”
Looking ahead, Manchester City will take on RB Leipzig on Wednesday, a team that has conceded eight goals in three Champions League games this season. Fans will recall Haaland’s electrifying performance, where he netted five goals in a previous encounter with Leipzig during the Round of 16 in 2023.
In other news, Arsenal welcomes back defender William Saliba, who has been sidelined since suffering a back injury during the first half of France’s 2-0 World Cup semifinal loss to Spain in July. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta confirmed on Tuesday that Saliba “is in a really good place” and has joined the team on their trip to Czechia for their match against Slavia Prague.
“His evolution has been as expected, which is not always the case,” Arteta remarked. “He feels very comfortable. He played 45 minutes behind closed doors last week. He feels ready to go now, so whether we use him or not is a matter of what the team needs.”
Arsenal has enjoyed a solid start to their Champions League campaign, boasting wins against Napoli and Lille as well as a draw with Bayern Munich. They currently sit at the top of the Premier League title race, aiming to add more silverware after last season’s domestic success and a near miss in the final.
Elsewhere in the Champions League, Mathis Albert and Borussia Dortmund will host Real Betis at Signal Iduna Park. Napoli is set to travel to Portugal for a showdown against Porto, while Lens takes on Como. PSV, featuring players Sergiño Dest and Ricardo Pepi, will face Club Brugge, and Sabah is slated to meet Viking.
