Porto Overpowers Napoli Despite McTominay’s Goal

Porto Secures First Champions League Win with Dominating Performance Against Napoli

Porto celebrated their first victory in this season’s Champions League by defeating Napoli 4-1, thanks to a strong second-half performance that saw them score three goals.

Despite their success in the domestic league, where they have won all 10 of their Primeira Liga matches, Porto had struggled in European competition, losing their first three games. However, they began to turn things around when Jan Bednarek, a former Southampton defender, scored with a powerful header from a corner taken by Gabri Veiga just 11 minutes into the match.

Napoli responded just before the halftime whistle, with Scott McTominay equalizing in the 43rd minute. McTominay capitalized on a rebounded effort after a save by Porto’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa following a shot from Rasmus Hojlund, marking his second goal in two consecutive Champions League appearances after recently returning from heart surgery.

In the second half, Porto took control of the match. Both Bednarek and Veiga struck the crossbar before Veiga found the net again, scoring Porto’s second goal following a well-placed through ball from Santiago Gimenez. The home side extended their lead in the 80th minute when Jakub Kiwior, a former Arsenal player, headed in a corner delivered by Hwang In-beom.

Porto rounded off their scoring just before the final whistle when Samu Aghehowa converted a penalty after being fouled by Rafa Marin, who was subsequently shown a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Marin will now serve a suspension for Napoli’s away game against Manchester City on 24 November, while Porto will travel to face Feyenoord on the same day.

As both teams now find themselves with three points from their first four matches in the league phase, they face an uphill battle if they hope to qualify for the knockout stages.
