Porto Defeats Napoli 4-1 in Champions League Clash
Napoli struggled defensively, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to FC Porto under Francesco Farioli’s management, displaying vulnerabilities particularly on set pieces and following a late red card for Rafa Marin.
After a challenging start, the Partenopei had recently managed to secure their first Champions League points by beating Bodo/Glimt 4-3, but faced a setback just days prior with a 2-0 loss to Juventus in Serie A.

Napoli’s injury list included key players such as Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Mathias Olivera, Stanislav Lobotka, Leonardo Spinazzola, Alisson Santos, Benoit Badiashile, Costantino Favasuli, David Neres, and Alessandro Buongiorno, while Luca Marianucci did not make the UEFA roster. Rasmus Hojlund returned after missing the match against Juventus due to flu symptoms, and Kevin De Bruyne managed to play a more advanced role in a 3-5-2 formation despite overcoming an ankle injury, as noted in the following link: play a more advanced role in this 3-5-2 formation.
FC Porto, who topped their domestic league with a perfect record under Farioli, suffered defeats in all three of their European matches this season against Manchester City, Real Betis, and PSV Eindhoven. The squad faced setbacks with injuries to Vasco Sousa, William Gomes, and former Roma defender Chris Smalling, while Oskar Pietuszewski required a late fitness assessment after missing the previous three games. Andre Silva and Santiago Gimenez, both former Milan strikers, were included in the lineup.

Antonio Vergara returned to the starting lineup after an extended absence and received a booking within the first minute for a reckless challenge on Jan Bednarek.
FC Porto nearly scored early when Pepê found the net in the fourth minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside after he beat the offside trap and hit the underside of the bar. The pressure continued, and Porto took the lead by exploiting Napoli’s defense, as Gabriel Veiga delivered a corner that Bednarek headed in unmarked from nine yards.
Hojlund’s penalty appeals fell on deaf ears when he was brought down while chasing a pass from De Bruyne. He later made a strong run from his own half, evading two fouls, but his strike went just wide of the post.

Gabriel Veiga’s free-kick attempt struck the side-netting following a risky foul from Scott McTominay near the penalty area. De Bruyne managed to find the net on 38 minutes, but the goal was disallowed for offside. However, Napoli found their equalizer amid a scramble, as Diogo Costa made a pair of impressive saves on a long-range effort from Matteo Politano, followed by attempts from Hojlund. Ultimately, McTominay’s strike proved too much for the goalkeeper to handle.
Porto nearly regained their lead when a deflected ball turned into an unintentional assist for Pablo Rosario, but Alex Meret denied the close-range attempt. They then almost repeated their earlier success, as Bednarek had another free header on a corner, but this time the ball bounced off the top of the crossbar.

The pressure continued to mount on Napoli as Gabriel Veiga struck the crossbar with a powerful shot from distance, and Santiago Gimenez failed to convert from a promising position, hitting the ball directly at Meret. However, the breakthrough finally came when Gimenez correctly weighted a pass to Veiga, who finished past the advancing Meret to put Porto ahead.
Disaster struck for Napoli when Samu went clear during a counter-attack but could not generate enough force in his shot. Porto extended their lead with another unmarked header off a corner, this time from Jakub Kiwior. The situation deteriorated as Samu was brought down without a legitimate attempt to play the ball, resulting in a red card for Rafa Marin and a penalty kick that Samu converted to finalize the score at 4-1.
