Seattle Dominates Orlando to Snag Last Playoff Spot
Seattle entered their match against Orlando knowing a win would guarantee their spot in the NWSL playoffs. The Reign executed their plan effectively, dominating the game and securing the important win.
The urgency of the match was palpable among the players, who put forth a strong defensive effort. Orlando attempted three shots in the first half, but Seattle’s defense blocked two and the third missed its target entirely. In the 17th minute, Seattle nearly scored when Nérilia Mondésir bypassed Orlando keeper Cosette Morché, only for Oihane to clear her shot off the line just in time. In a crucial moment just before halftime, Morché deflected Jess Fishlock’s close-range attempt, keeping the score tied at the break.

In the second half, Seattle’s defense continued to shine, as they blocked three more shots and denied Orlando any shots on target throughout the match. Seattle finally broke the deadlock with a goal midway through the second half from a brilliantly executed corner. Mondésir’s low pass found Fishlock, who backheeled it to Fishel; the shot was deflected to Jordyn Bugg, who netted it just inside the post.
The victory not only secured Seattle’s playoff position but also set up a quarter-final match against Gotham on Sunday, November 8. The win delighted fans at Lumen Field, though it was bittersweet, marking Fishlock’s last home game before her retirement, as she has been a key player for the Reign since 2013.
Gotham Wins Against Utah to Claim First Supporters’ Shield
Unlike last season, when Gotham had to navigate the playoffs away from home, this year they will defend their championship at Sports Illustrated Stadium after securing the Supporters’ Shield with a win over Utah.
Gotham’s mission was straightforward: win or draw, and the Shield was theirs. They faced a struggling Utah team, playing their signature strong defensive style to clinch the victory. The game’s first goal came early in the ninth minute when Midge Purce sent a cross that deflected off defender Ana Tejada directly to Guro Reiten, who tapped it in from close range.
After trading opportunities in the first half, the sides went into the break with Gotham leading. In the second half, Gotham created more chances, with Purce and Jaedyn Shaw just missing the target. The Bats sealed the match in the 80th minute when Purce set up a pass into the box, which Shaw touched, and the ball went past Utah’s keeper into the goal.
With this win, Gotham will host Seattle in the quarter-finals, marking a significant moment for the franchise as they prepare to defend their title on home turf before the final, which will take place at Audi Field in Washington. Utah will enter the playoffs as the seventh seed, making their first playoff appearance in franchise history, facing San Diego on Friday, November 6.
North Carolina’s Late Goal Downs Denver, but Both Teams Miss Playoffs
The match between North Carolina and Denver held great significance, yet with the result dependent on Seattle’s match, it ultimately had no playoff implications. Both teams battled hard with their high-scoring records in the league, but the outcome favored neither in the end.
Denver’s Tash Flint faced an early challenge from North Carolina’s Kailen Sheridan, who made a great save. The Courage’s standout, Ashley Sanchez, also had her efforts thwarted by Denver’s Abby Smith. Although both teams created numerous chances, nothing could find the back of the net until late in the match.

In stoppage time, North Carolina found a stroke of luck when Denver’s Kaleigh Kurtz inadvertently scored an own goal while trying to clear a loose ball. This unfortunate twist concluded Denver’s season. Seconds later, Seattle scored against Orlando, extinguishing any hopes for both teams of making the playoffs. North Carolina finishes ninth for the second consecutive season, just shy of playoff contention.
Despite not qualifying, both teams demonstrated potential. Sanchez’s remarkable record of 20 goals this season ties the league’s scoring record, and Denver showed resilience in their inaugural season. Both will focus on improvements before the next season.
Angel City Secures High Spirits with Win Over Boston
Angel City continued their impressive momentum with a decisive victory over expansion side Boston on Decision Day, extending their unbeaten streak to ten matches.
Boston demonstrated strong control in the first half with a competitive approach. Although Angel City opened the scoring with a well-placed goal by Nealy Martin, Boston quickly responded with an equalizer from Amanda Gutierres.

The second half saw Angel City reclaim control, with Evelyn Shores putting them ahead again with a header. They went on to dominate the match, finishing with goals in the 72nd minute and another shortly after, sealing their place in the playoffs and establishing strong momentum as they enter the post-season. They will face off against Kansas City in the quarter-finals on Saturday, November 7.
Boston’s inaugural season showed promise, and they will aim to strengthen their defense in the off-season.
San Diego Secures Second Place with Win Over Bay FC
San Diego, looking to maintain their spot in the standings, achieved this goal by claiming victory over Bay FC on Decision Day.
After an early scare, San Diego found their rhythm and scored the only goal in the match ten minutes in, as Kenza Dali’s assist led to a strike by Mimi Van Zanten.

Bay FC attempted to respond strongly in the second half but were ultimately unable to break through San Diego’s defense. The Wave secured all three points to clinch their position, allowing them to maintain home field advantage in the playoffs.
Portland Claims Sixth Spot with Win Over Houston
Portland, having already secured a playoff spot, sought to finalize their seeding against a Houston side that was already out of playoff contention. The Thorns played cohesively, leveraging scoring opportunities successfully for the win.
Despite the shaky defensive performance from both teams, the Thorns’ Sophia Wilson stood out. After a slow start, Wilson finally scored after finding the net. She tacked on another goal shortly after, converting a penalty kick, and finished strong.

Kansas City Clinches Fourth Spot with Win Over Racing Louisville
The Current aimed to lock in their playoff spot and did so with an important victory over Racing Louisville, scoring two goals in the match.
Kansas City found their first goal off a corner early in the match and maintained pressure throughout. Louisville struggled to find scoring opportunities, which allowed Kansas City to maintain their lead and ultimately secure their place in the playoffs.

Washington Spirits Overpower Chicago in 2-0 Victory
Washington came into the match against Chicago with high hopes of securing a second-place finish, but settled for a dominant 2-0 victory, keeping them firmly in third.

Though the first half saw few clear chances, Washington capitalized on a lucky break in the second with an own goal from Chicago that opened the scoring. Trinity Rodman added an insurance goal late in the match, sealing the win for the Spirit.
