Enzo Maresca Faces Key Midfield Challenge at Manchester City

Enzo Maresca Seeks Ideal Midfield Combination for Manchester City

As the season progresses, Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is still in search of the perfect midfield configuration. Currently, his favored trio consists of Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez, and Rayan Cherki, with Anderson operating as the holding midfielder. However, this formation has proven to be excessively open, prompting discussions about possible adjustments to solidify the midfield.

A potential remedy involves deploying Ayyoub Bouaddi as the deep-lying midfielder, partnering him with Anderson and utilizing Cherki, Phil Foden, or Enzo Fernandez in a more advanced role. Notably, fans are yet to witness a match featuring both Anderson and Bouaddi together in the starting lineup.

In recent comments, Maresca addressed the midfield situation, indicating that he has identified a foundation for his midfield strategy. He shared insights into his decision-making process as he continues to refine the City midfield dynamics.

Against Brighton, City fielded Bouaddi, Anderson, and Fernandez but struggled to find cohesion, culminating in a narrow 1-0 defeat. Anderson played a more central role while Bouaddi engaged in pressing high alongside striker Erling Haaland. However, Fernandez appeared out of sorts, contributing little to the midfield’s effectiveness.

Maresca explained his rationale for these decisions in the wake of the match, stating, “The idea was to have Elliot close to the central defender for different reasons: for the transition, for the build-up. Both, they can play, they are a No.6 at the moment.” He emphasized the need for balance within the squad and mentioned the flexibility of player roles depending on specific game plans.

He further stated, “It’s a matter of balance. We have Elliot, Ayyoub, Enzo, Rayan, Phil, Mateo Kovacic when he played some games. So game by game, it depends a little bit on the game plan to use different players.”

Maresca has noted that Anderson has settled well into his role within City’s setup and deserves to be a central figure in the midfield. His ability to cover large areas of the pitch has been crucial, although problems arise when he is bypassed. When Anderson, Cherki, and Fernandez play together, opposing teams have the capacity to exploit the midfield weakness.

To strengthen this area, pairing Bouaddi with Anderson could provide the necessary support. Bouaddi excels as a number six, complementing Anderson’s style of play. This partnership would not only enhance midfield security but would also allow attackers like Cherki, Foden, or Fernandez to focus on offensive duties.

With just four months at the helm, Maresca is still fine-tuning his squad. Nevertheless, he may benefit by centering his midfield around Bouaddi and Anderson, which seems like a straightforward and effective solution to improve Manchester City’s performance moving forward.
