Roberto De Zerbi Faces Challenge in Addressing Tottenham’s Puzzling Start

Tottenham Faces Disappointment After Loss to Leeds

Tottenham Hotspur traveled to Elland Road on the back of three consecutive victories, but left disappointed after failing to perform in crucial areas. Manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed frustration, stating, “We did not show character, we did not show personality, we did not show courage.” His reflections on the second half against Leeds highlighted significant issues.

Critics may point fingers at the forward line, which struggled with their performances, notably in the left winger, right winger, and centre-forward positions. This criticism, however, may overlook the potential of players like Mohammed Kudus, who is still finding his form, and Mathys Tel, who departed early due to what De Zerbi fears might be a serious injury.

Despite their earlier successes, Tottenham’s attack generated little threat against Leeds, a stark contrast to the seven goals they managed in their previous three games. Currently, only Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, and Sunderland have scored fewer goals in the Premier League, and that could change as the season progresses.

Out of the ten goals scored by Spurs, only three have come from forwards, with Dominic Solanke’s late equalizer at Old Trafford, a stunning goal from Omar Marmoush against Coventry, and Tel’s solo effort at Chelsea. While there’s a discussion around quality versus quantity, comparisons to former star Harry Kane, who is experiencing a goal drought at Bayern Munich, further highlight Tottenham’s struggles.

Marmoush, who is part of a forward dynamic that does not fully exploit traditional strike roles, faces challenges in fitting into De Zerbi’s system, which does not prioritize two strikers. Meanwhile, Savio and Tel, both options on the left, haven’t delivered the anticipated results. With 18-year-old Luca Williams-Barnett generating excitement, there appears to be a lack of depth in quality among the more experienced players.

De Zerbi’s tactical dilemmas extend beyond the attack. He experimented with a 4-3-3 formation against Leeds, having previously relied on specific role players like Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, who are yet to find their best synergy together.

In addition, the injury situation has left gaps in the squad. Notable players, including James Maddison, who scored against Coventry but did not play at Leeds, and Dejan Kulusevski, who made a rare appearance, add to the uncertainty.

Tottenham’s journey reveals a pressing need for creativity, which is reflected in their mid-table position for chance creation and shooting statistics. They struggled notably with a league-low conversion rate of 6.5 percent, an issue highlighted by defender Jan Paul van Hecke being their top scorer with two goals.

Upcoming matches against Ipswich, Sunderland, and Fulham present opportunities for Spurs to improve their scoring record, but this will require their forwards to find their rhythm to maximize results.
