Chelsea Join Race to Sign Botafogo Midfielder Danilo Santos

Chelsea have entered the growing competition for Danilo Santos, signaling another significant development in this summer’s midfield transfer market. According to FogaoNET, the London club recently submitted an initial enquiry to Botafogo regarding the Brazil international as interest intensifies across the Premier League.

While the discussions remain at an early stage, Chelsea’s involvement is notable. The 25-year-old has attracted attention from Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle United, with each club evaluating the situation differently. This indicates a competitive market emerging for the player following his successful return to form in Brazil.

    Danilo Santos on Chelsea shortlist

The timing of Chelsea’s interest appears strategic. With Andrey Santos expected to depart for Manchester United this summer, the club is prioritising depth in midfield. While Danilo Santos offers a different style of play, his specific qualities have prompted the recruitment team to investigate a potential deal.

The midfielder has regained his form at Botafogo following a challenging, injury-prone period at Nottingham Forest. His resurgence earned him a spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad, and despite limited playing time during the tournament, his overall performance level keeps him on the radar of several major clubs.

Chelsea are currently conducting due diligence on the player, valuing his mix of experience, physical strength, and tactical versatility. The deal remains an option if the valuation aligns with their assessment.

    Botafogo valuation under scrutiny

Botafogo previously hoped the World Cup would push Danilo Santos’ transfer fee toward €40m, or approximately £34m. However, that price point has yet to be met. Reports from ESPN Brazil suggest that Palmeiras tested the market with a €25m (£21.5m) bid, which Botafogo turned down, signaling a desire for a higher fee.

There is growing sentiment that the club’s price expectations are becoming more realistic. Should Botafogo prioritize a significant sale, competing Premier League bids could drive the price closer to that higher valuation. While a formal auction has not yet begun, the potential for one exists.

Furthermore, Nottingham Forest are still owed funds from the midfielder’s previous transfer, a factor that could influence how any future financial agreement is structured.

    Newcastle remain strong contenders

Chelsea currently remain one of several interested parties rather than the clear frontrunner. Sources in Brazil suggest Newcastle United holds a strong position, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Bruno Guimarães and the potential need for a midfield successor. Manchester United have initiated direct contact with Botafogo, while Arsenal’s interest has been managed through the player’s representatives.

Four Premier League teams now monitor the midfielder, who is represented by Bertolucci Sports—an agency with established connections to all involved clubs. These initial enquiries could intensify rapidly if a club shifts from viewing the player as a contingency to a primary target.

For Chelsea, this remains an active situation. As competition grows, Botafogo faces a decision on whether to maintain their high asking price or accept the market value for Danilo Santos.
