Egypt Honors Hamza Abdelkarim Following World Cup Breakthrough
Hamza Abdelkarim emerged as one of the youngest talents at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, earning a spot on the Egyptian national team roster despite having limited experience at the highest level of professional football.
As a youth player for Barcelona, Hamza made four appearances during the tournament, though he did not start in any of those matches. He contributed to an Egyptian squad that achieved a surprising run to the Round of 16.
Egypt’s subsequent elimination at the hands of Argentina remains a point of major contention, as the nation maintains that officials deprived them of a victory. Consequently, the team received a hero’s welcome upon their return for the resilience they displayed on the pitch.
State honours for Hamza
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Hamza and his teammates participated in an official state welcome after arriving back in Cairo. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hosted the squad on Saturday to honor their performance.
The president commended the players for competing with integrity and earning public respect, stating that these achievements hold more value than any trophy.
This campaign marked a significant milestone for the young striker, who established himself as Egypt’s youngest-ever World Cup debutant at the age of 18 years and 165 days.
Returning to Flick’s squad
Despite the high-profile homecoming and national recognition, Hamza is returning immediately to his duties at Barcelona.
The 18-year-old is among the youth prospects summoned by manager Hansi Flick to participate in first-team pre-season training.
Although his World Cup participation entitled him to two additional weeks of leave, Hamza declined the extra time off. He will join his teammates this Monday to begin preparations under the German coach.
This decision demonstrates his commitment, as the youngster is eager to make an immediate impression during pre-season in hopes of securing a place in the first-team squad for the upcoming season.
